Hi there

Tracy suggests that parents try Wake to Sleep to address habitual night wakings (and can also be used on naps to try and extend short naps).  The process for naps and night wakings differs a little - I will address night times.

The idea is that by bringing your child out of their deep sleep, you interrupt the sleep cycle which means that DC will be in a different place in their sleep cycle when they reach their habitual waking time - interrupting the pattern on waking at a set time.

She suggests setting an alarm for 1 hour before the habitual waking time, going in and rub his head or belly a bit, reinsert a paci or something that will bring DC into semi-consciousness.  Then leave and allow your DC to fall back to sleep.  Tracy suggests that this needs to be done for 3 nights to break the habit.

This only works on habitual wakings where the waking is at the same time each night.  It will not work where the cause of the waking is hunger or pain related wakings.

HTH and good luck
Jo
