We give Tom ...

-Ricecakes (the ones made esp for babies as contain no sugar salt or additives)
-Rusks (only occasionally as contain sugar)
-Toast (should really give wholemeal... but we give white  :-[)
-Bannana (very ripe and cut into stris... very slippery so most ends up on floor ;D)
-cooked carrot pieces (VERY well cooked as DS will gag on it if at all firm... cold)

all these things have been ok'd in the UK but i know guidelines are different in different countries, so it may be worth checking with your doc if you are worried.

cheerios
dreid fruit (cut-up, organic apricots, prunes etc)
Toast/bread (with thin amount of anchor butter on as this has no additives in or you could use unsalted)
sausage (cut-up)
small bits of cheese
orange cut up into pieces
sweetcorn
peas
small pasta shapes
any kind of bean cut in half, we like soybeans

Hi and thanks for your ideas, i have been a bit unsure of what to give my d.d as i get worried she will chock. i notice alot of people give their children cherios. Would you give them cherios alone i worry she might choke on them are they hard? Sorry about sounding silly but cherios are new to us here in australia as i haven't noticed them on the shelf before.

I thought my DD would choke too but I tried them and she loves them. I give her water or formula in a sippy to wash them down. My DH also put some in her formula to soften them first -they get soggy but she liked them.

:) hi again by the way how many bottles does your baby have? My d.d was having 4 but now doesn't seem interested in her mid morning one.

Igave her toast today she enjoyed it mainly just playing with it.

The Cheerios here in Aus are actually sugar loaded about 15% sugar, so I would avoid giving them.

I give Liam (8.5months) the Sun rice rice cakes (thin ones) & Corn cruskits (have been giving since 6.5 months), He loves them both & eats them like toast, but it doesn't stick to the roof of his mouth like toast does. he would eat both all day. The both contain a small amount of salt, but less than most other commercial foods.

Hi again,
I belong to another mom's forum and got the following ideas for finger food:

like plain rice cakes, cheerios, saltine crackers(with no salt). She even likes cream cheese on the cracker.
I also peel whole fruit (banana, pear, apples) and let her shred it herself (with her three bottom teeth)...She also loves canned mandarins and peaches (I buy them in their own juice, or, if they are in a light syrup, I just rinse them off really well).
Veggies work too, I steamed some cauliflower, and left it in rosettes, and she loved them!

Try giving pieces of fruit or veggies, cheese, cereal, raisins/dried cranberries, etc... I just gave her whatever I was eating for lunch/dinner.. rice, mashed potatoes, noodles (the rotini noodles are great!)

I used to give Grace little Paris Toasts. They're like little thick mini melba toasts. They were great - they softened up wonderfully when she gummed them.

Have you tried spreading the puree's fruit or veggies on her dry toast? In order to make veggies more appealing for Des I add a cube of fruit and save the juices from when I make his fruit to think out the vegitable cereal mix. Makes it a little sweeter and more appealing.
Cooked baby carrots for a finger food, sliced cooked potatoe, hunks of bannana

I gave her some baked beans today too and she liked them....

About the bottles. Health visitors in the uk say you can cut out the lunchtime bottle now, as long as your lo is getting plenty of cheese, yogert etc and about a pint of formula a day (tom only takes about 15-18 oz of formula now, so we have to make sure we mix it in his foods and give lot so yogherts etc)
