Hit the Puree brick wall
« on: February 13, 2006, 12:05:00 pm »
Hi there - my DD is nearly 8 months and she is going on a bit of a puree hunger strike.  She has been eating solids now for about 2.5 or 3 months and doing great but we have hit a brick wall. She wants to feed herself but can't manage a spoon yet.

I have started to give her cheerios, slices of dry toast, shredded cheese, banana, etc...but I am looking for other suggestions.  Should I keep trying to get her to eat pureed food or is this what happens when they want to move up to more textured food?  I know that most of her nutrients come from her milk but I worry she doesn't get enough food.

Any advice welcome!
Leslie

It's pretty normal to start refusing the spoon at that age. It will be a long time before she can manage the spoon on her own (I think 18 mo is the average), so welcome to the world of finger food! You can offer her a pretty varied diet of ripe fruit chunks and steamed veggie chunks. If foods seem slippery and she's having a hard time, you can coat them with dry baby cereal or crushed cheerios. It will seem like she's eating less, but that's okay. Remember that purees are mostly water and finger foods are just food, so it will take less to fill her up but she's actually getting the same amount of food, if not more. Sometimes letting her hold a spoon can help you get some puree into her, but if that doesn't work, no big deal. Good luck!

Thanks for the response and support. I will try the dry cereal idea on her food....

alecks got these 'dippers' for christmas - they are from walmart i believe, comes in a package of two and instead of a spoon which is hard for them to control, u show lo's how to 'dip' and put it in their mouths to give them more control of the feeding process.  alecks is hot and cold with them one day she wants it the next day she doesn't...but she also has no problem opening up for her purees, might be worth a try leslie!
