« on: February 13, 2006, 18:10:59 pm »
How can I prepare homemade apricot puree for DD? Would I steam or bake them and then blend? And add water to thin? Help!

I steam and blend; add water if needed. I did however find that they tended to come out a little sour. SO keep an eye on that; I usually mixed them with another sweet fruit. e.g. banana

Thanks - how long do you steam for? And do you just blend in regular blender? Also good to know re sour but can't add to other foods yet - DD is just going to be restarting solids after time off (digestive issues) and we need to start really slowly and with one food at a time...)

Hi, I stew them in about an inch of water until they get soft enough to blend.  Usually between 10 to 15 mins on medium heat. And I blend them in a regular ol' blender ;) Sometimes I'll add the leftover water to make it a bit thinner if needed.  May I suggest pears or apples to re-introduced frutis?  They're easier en the tummy and real easy to digest, plus they are sweeter too ;)  I prepare them the same way, but they cook faster in about 8 mins.  Oh, and I pass them through a sieve after I blend them. HTH  :-*

Hi Rebecca and thanks. Actually, pears and apples can be harder on tummies! Especially if baby had colic. Pears in particular. Pears and prunes have a lot of sorbitol, which can cause intestinal gas and cramping - a definitely problem for DD - so we are looking for other foods. See some information linked below. Additionally, DD had allergic reaction to apples previously (rash and vomiting)

Oh no!!! Sorry for the bum advice!!!  I read in Tracy's last book that pears were easier and put ped told me also!!  I had no idea they were higher in sorbitol!  Poor little girl, she's already feeling icky and here I came giving her more ickiness!  :-\ I hope she feels betterm and thanks for the link, I'm on my way right now to read it!

Sorry again  :P

Don't be sorry!!! For most babies they probably are easier and since she is prone to constipation we had tried them. So it's tough trying to think of and prepare foods that won't bind her (we'd love to try banana otherwise) but also won't have the sorbitol issue. Might try avocado early on for this reason...

BTW - this holds true for juice too. Pear and prune juice and even apple juice can cause gas and cramping and colic symptoms - whereas white grape juice tends not to and tends to be the easiest on tummy. We don't do juice here but good to know...

Karen, what about adding a touch of juice to help with the sour?  Just a thought as I don't know much about making baby food.

Just wondering the fruit that you use is it in cans, dried, or fresh? I would like to find a fruit that my lo will eat. I've tried them all before giving them to her and the stuff in the jars seems much more sour than veggies do.
