As far as I know, baby cereal oatmeal is perfectly fine for 5.5 mo babies.  I personally think it's better than rice cereal because the chances of constipation are smaller.

Yes, mix it with bm if you are expressing.

Yes definitely. You should use only the baby oatmeal for now.

We've been giving Jasper oats (Quaker) that we grind to a fairly fine consistency in the food processor, then cook with water (though you could use breastmilk or formula, we use water since he's so easily constipated and the extra water keeps things moving).  It tastes great, and you avoid the processed/cardboard flavor of the stuff in a box.  We also use vitamin drops so he gets enough iron...
We found with Josie that there really isn't anything you need to buy a 'baby' version of, except maybe teething biscuits :)
Good luck!

I would think that the only reason to buy the "baby" version of certain foods is because of (1) the vitamins and minerals they add in the right doses for babies in the foods themselves (2) it is fine enough so that the baby won't choke or gag on any pieces and (3) there shouldn't be any preservatives or other additives that are bad for the baby (unfortunately, if you read labels, that's not always the case).

That said, I was told that regular foods (fruits, oatmeal, etc) are fine for older babies as long as they are soft enough, cooked enough or melt in the baby's mouth.   ;D
