Long napper became short napper at 11 weeks
« on: February 20, 2006, 17:33:52 pm »
I have a 12 week year old who has for the most part been a very good sleeper.  Starting at 8 weeks, she was sleeping 7 hours straight at night and now she has demonstrated that she can go 10 hours straight.  When she was only going 7 hours straight, her naps lasted around two hours each during the day.  Then she seemed to want to move her bedtime up so now she goes down at about 7:00 pm with a feed at 3:30 am.  After that middle of the night feed, she sleeps until 8:00 am which gives her 13 hours of night sleep.  Once she started sleeping so long at night, her naps are now only 45 minutes and she can only stay up for about an hour.

As she is almost 3 months old, should she be staying up longer in between naps?  I have read on the message board about pu/pd until she sleeps again or wake to sleep and I'm wondering if she even needs to nap longer if she's already sleeping for so long.  I would like her to have more awake time though so I can play with her more and having to put her to sleep 6 times a day can get tiring.  I'm pretty sure she knows how to fall asleep on her own since we've always put her down drowsy and have never used props.

I started to dreamfeed last night so she went to bed at 7:00 pm, dreamfeed at 10:00 pm and she woke up at 6:30 am.  I didn't think it made sense to do another dreamfeed so I treated that as her wake-up time thinking that might solve her nap issue. But it didn't...she just woke up from another 45 minute nap!

Everyone on this board seems to know what they're talking about so any suggestions are welcome!  Thanks.

Just wanted to say that your daughter sounds exactly like my son! The exact same thing happened to me about 11 weeks. It seems to be a very common problem. Am looking forward to what replies you get!

I forgot to say that strangely enough, when she is in her car seat, she will nap for 2-3 hours at a time even if she's motionless. Whenever she is in her car seat, I pretty much have to wake her up so that I can feed her so I know she "can" nap for longer than 45 minutes, she just doesn't when she's in her crib.
