could it really be hunger?
« on: March 01, 2006, 16:55:17 pm »
I have been trying to decide why DS has suddenly been having restless nights. He is 14 weeks. This has been happening for about 2 weeks. He wakes up every few hours and needs the dummy to go back to sleep. The fact that this process only takes 5-20 mins without any proper crying I assumed it wasn't hunger. However I've been reading about Josie in the naps section and how she hadn't spotted the 12 week growth spurt which led to short naps. And something in the BW book that says something similar. I have been waiting for DS to start waking in the night for food but he hasn't. I'm now wondering if these wakenings are food related. But why does he go back to sleep so easily? Surely he would really cry if he was hungry? What do you think? I do a dreamfeed at 10.15pm (about 5-6 oz) and then feed him about 7 when he wakes. He takes about 7oz.

I think with bf babies the growth spurt is easier as they suck in a different way, but with a bottle fed bub, maybe the sucking on the paci is enough to calm him. The best way to see if it is a growth spurt is to offer more & maybe on the night wake up & see if that works, otherwise it may be that he has developed a paci addiction & it is a prop, so it might be time to wean from that.

Its very possible that your LO is hungry. Some LO's settle easier then other. I'd suggest you try feeding him and see what happens. If nothing changes you may have a prop problem. If so you'll need to wean your LO of the Paci for sleep or he'll keep waking. More then likely though its a hunger thing.
