Homemade food vs store bought food
« on: March 01, 2006, 18:04:46 pm »
I have been giving my lo homemade food except for his cereals.  We just moved this weekend so things have been a little hectic.  I was running low on food so decided to give my lo a jar of squash.  Well, he didn't like it one bit.

Has anyone else run across this?

when i first fed alecks solids i gave her jars. then a few weeks later switched to homemade and she didn't like it at all!..made mommy feel horrible about her cooking  ;) i would mix it with the jars and eventually she got used to the taste. now if we are on the go or out visiting she will take the jars, and if we are at home she will eat homemade food. either way, i think it just takes some getting used to.

In my expereience, most babies who have been fed on homemade food hate jars. If you taste it yourself you'll know why!!! Its very artificial in taste and consistency and often doesn't taste of anything real.

If yu want to get her used to jars so you could use them occasionally in the future the above advice is great, mix them with your food to get him used to it.

Take it as a compliment that she likes your food so much!!!!

I tried Liam on his first non fruit jar today & I got my first spit out from him... I have given him fruit & he's been ok with that but the meat & veg, he was not impressed with... Aiden was the same. I found by the time Aiden got to about 10-11months, I just could give him sandwiches when we were out. If I go out for a meal these days & can't take home stuff, I just give the fruit & ricecakes.

The only one of mine that ate a couple of the jars was Marc(ds2) but only boots(uk) ones that were the "international" flavours lasagne, spag bol etc i think the other ones are very bland, yes i had a taste :-[
I only showed Jamie(ds3) the jar and he looked at me like "you know where you can put that"  ;)

Some jarred foods taste fine (the fruits aren't bad, well other than the bananas - which are gross) - but squash is a notoriously bad one. For some reason, jarred squash tastes GROSS - whereas homemade squash is quite yummy...

I give my DD both,  Mums Own jar food (UK) is delicious, its lucky she eats it all, or I would have it  :-[

I think her favourite is homemade food though, but it all gets eaten up anyway whether its jar or homemade.

If its not homemade and you have to use jars, buy organic.
I only buy organic babyfood or make my own and my DD loves them both!

My lo eats baby rice cereal in the morning and jars of fruit for lunch and savory jars for dinner. life has been very hectic lately we have had some major renovations done on the house so our lives have been very up-side-down so jars of baby food have been a bit easier to use while we are on the go. i would like to start using and cooking my own baby food, but I'm worried she wont like it because i have used store bought baby food for a while?? any thoughts?

My big tip is to mix the jar with a bit of your food, and then gradually increas ehte amount of home cooked in the bowl till it takes over, see it as 'weaning' them off the jars.
As has been said before, jars can be very bland, so they should enjoy it more cos its tastier.

Also try offering what you are eating, lead by example.
