About bread and other finger foods....
« on: March 04, 2006, 15:01:15 pm »
I will start my lo on finger foods soon... I am a little confused on the bread issue.  ::)  Do I give him lightly toasted (with or without butter?) or soft bread?  ???  Whole wheat or white?  In very little pieces or a strip so he can grab and suck on it?
What about carrots?  ???  I know they have to be cooked, how should they be cut?  In thin strips / little triangles?  ???
Cheese : strips of cheese or curds (and how big) or little squares?   ???
So many questions - I know!  Thanks in advance... :-\ Alex

There are differing opinions on this, but I always cut Tyler's finger food into small squares or pieces. When we were starting out, everything was the size of a cheerio. I found that if I gave him pieces any bigger than that, he'd either shove the whole thing in his mouth and gag or would have no control over how big of a bite he took. When Tyler first started, I lightly toasted his bread, it seemed easier for him to mush up. I gave him soft bread much later when he was able to eat chunks of sandwich. Butter is optional, I never used it. I've only used whole grain bread for him, as whole grain has more fiber and is far less constipating. Carrots and soft cheese, I always did small chunks, but I know some people have had luck with cottage cheese curds (Tyler hated them). HTH!
