Won't drink formula!
« on: March 07, 2006, 03:00:49 am »
Adam is now 9 months and has been on breastmilk exclusively since birth either through bfeeding or bottle feeding.  He's never had a problem taking a bottle.  Well, my milk supply has gone down and I can't keep up with the amount I think he should have just through bfeeding.  He took one bottle of formula last week after turning several attempts down and won't have anything to do with it since.  He drinks expressed bmilk in the morning and will bfeed sometimes in the afternoon and at bedtime.  He has gotten extremely impatient with bfeeding and after about 30 seconds won't latch on anymore and will cry.  I try to pump in the afternoon and evening but I don't get very much and he absolutely WON't take formula so I'm worried he's not getting enough liquids.  My ped. nurse said to try to keep him hydrated with water, juice, putting formula in his food (which I'm doing), but I just can't think that that is good enough.  I really want to be able to feed him a full feeding of formula at least once a day.  Any suggestions or similar situations would be a great help because I'm not sure how to help him!

Hi

what formula are you giving him ? Breast milk is very sweet so it might be due to the taste. My DD will only drink Peadiasure which is a milk shake formula ( very sweet ) she was BF but then like you pumping etc it slowed down.  Another idea is to add nesquick to the formula as it sweetens it up abit ( poos go very dark but nothing to worry about )

How old is he? What brand of formula have you tried?

how do you give him the EBM? What does he do when refusing the bottle? Have you tried other teats, sippy cup or cup?

He's nine months and has had EBM from the Avent bottles which he's never had a problem taking.  I first tried him on Enfamil Lipil and then tried Enfamil Prosobee Soy formula.  That's it so far.  I will definitely try the peadiasure and the nesquick to see if that works.  Oh, I've also tried the sippy cups and the only one he can drink from so far is the Nuby with the soft spout.  The others which are hard he just chews on and hasn't figured out that he needs to suck on them yet.

Thanks so much for the great advice and I'll get back on how those two options go?  Any other options are certainly welcome as well!

I have also heard that Carnation Good Start tastes more like breast milk. I used this formula and loved it. It is lighter in color like breast milk - loved that - less stains on clothes!  ;)

Have you tried mixing the EBM with the formula - Callum did the same thing, and I just added a bit of formula to the EBM and increased the amount of formula and decreased the EBM until he was excusively on formula.  I do think that Goodstart is the most like breastmilk.

Okay, today we tried a couple of things.  First I tried adding the Nesquick to the formula and he still didn't want it.  Then I tried Enfamil Gentlease which is supposed to be similar to breast milk and he didn't want that either.  I forgot about the the Good Start so we'll try that tomorrow.  I went ahead and added like a 1/4 ounce of the gentlease to my EBM and he took it so we'll keep doing that and up it along the way.  He will take the bottle for about a drink or two and then spit it out.  The Pediasure said that it was for children ages 1-10 so I called my ped. and they told me to hold off and that he was too young.  ???

Problem is, I'm hardly getting any breast milk right now when I pump and he's been taking about 6 oz 3 times a day.  At this point I would really like to try to increase my milk supply again.  Is it possible this late in the game to get back to where I was at about 6 months? (pumping 5 oz per breast every few hours or so)

I'm so worried that he's not getting enough fluids!  I just don't know what to do now that my milk has gone down so dramatically and I don't feel like I have enough to just rely on pumping and adding formula each time.  Will he eventually just get so hungry that he'll take the formula?

Thank you very much for the advice and reassurement!  Today I've pumped and fed him at every feed including the solids so hopefully after a few days like you said it will pay off.  One more question, I've read that you can take certain herbal supplements, etc. to help but I'm not sure which ones really work and where to get them?

Thanks!

I'm not sure about the herbal supplements, but you may want to ask on the BF forum.  :)
