He wont take more
« on: March 08, 2006, 18:35:13 pm »
My 3 month old will sleep for an average of 7 hour stretches. Once he did 9 hours. He has done 7 hours since 2 months old...and I really feel he should be "upping" his stretch to an average of 8 or 9 hours.

He goes down at 6:30pm and does a DF at 10 and is hungry by 1am or 2 (if Im lucky!) and takes 4 oz.....sometimes he'll take 3 more oz around 4am. AFter this he wakes at 5am for seeminly no reason.....then again around 6am.......ugh

Naturally I assume he needs 7 more oz during the day.. However, he is on 3 hour EASY and usually doesnt take more than 3 oz at a time! I cant seem to get him to eat more no matter how hard I try. I have tried tanking him up at 5pm - 6:30pm ...should I try tanking him earlier (around 4pm?) and forget the 3 hour rule?

Also, would changing his nipple to a faster flow help? I just noticed I havent switched to the nipple that says "3mo+"

elliotlove I was going to suggest a fast nipple before I reached the bottom of your post  ;) If that is too fast try and put a small hole in the current one you are using so you have a happy-medium for a while-  he should not gag on the teat because of fast flow milk.

He could also be waking at 5am becasue he thinks that is his wake up time, you say you have in in bed at 1830.

It is common for LO to be up twice a night at this age, mine was - he has only recently started sleeping through.

How long have you done a d/feed?
Have you tried a night without the d/f to see if he still wakes at 1 or 2am - I never did a d/feed for this very reason.

Its getting there. We are moving to a 4hour routine, so its a bit of a struggle and he needs to eat about 10oz more during his feeds.
Here is our day so far.....and EAS isnt in a good order yet.
He is eating a lot at night. Last night he went to bed at 7:30. We did a DF at 10pm and he had 4 oz....however, he woke up an hour later (11pm) and took 7oz! grrr
Then he woke at 3am hungry but I gave him watered down formula - 4oz (like that email you sent me, I gave him double the water and half the formula) so that he would eat in the morning. As you can see he had 5oz but he needs to be eating more like 7oz
Any advice?

woke 6:30 am (not hungry)
E 7:30  5oz
A
S 8:30 - 9:50

A
E 11:15  7oz
A
S 11:50 - right now its 1:10 and he's still sleeping

do you think he had his feeds swapped, i.e eating what he should be during the day and vice-versa?

yes - he is eating a lot in the late afternoon til midnight. Dont know how to break the cycle...?? Do you think I should water down all night bottles after the DF? Im afraid if I do this he will be waking all night?

Thank you
So do you think that I should keep his DF the same (let him take as much as he can) and then any time he wakes after this reduce the amount by an oz or so?

Courtney stick with it, these changes will take a while to settle down (poss. up to a week or more), you are making huge progress. How did he get on the rest of the night??

Your doing great  :D

things didnt go well last night, but get this, I think he has been hot!! We swaddle him and put a sleeper outfit on him and when he woke I thought he was wet...but it was sweat! we took the outfit off of him, turned down the heat and re-swaddled and he slept better...but this whole night was disturbed, so he was still up a little.
He wasnt hungry all night though, didnt eat at all after the DF!

This morning he woke at 7am and he had 5oz....very consistent. I am feeling very optimistic! He stayed up for almost 2hrs and is napping now.

thank you for your encouragement!
