Problems with feeding....again
« on: March 09, 2006, 06:52:09 am »
Ds has decided he only wants about 10oz of formula/day ???
He is eating 3 meals a day, not big either.  he also still doesn't sleep though night.
I am trying to get rid of the df but he wakes for it anyway(this is the only time it is not a fight to get formula in him, though only takes about 4oz), also gets up about 1 other time in night, I just resettle him and he usually goes back down.  Except the past couple nights as he is cutting his 6th tooth(they just won't give him or me a break) and not drinking his formula at all during day so wants it at night.  he'll eat his solids.
So 2 concerns about this:
1) Should I worry about him only taking about 10-15oz/day, or is he at that age(almost 8 mths) that solids are enough for him.
2) How do I then get him to stop waking for bottle in night?

Just when I think everything is finally getting better, something else comes up.  Just want him to sleep, not just for me, but when he gets up in the night for bottles he is always grummpy the next day.
Thanks for any advice.

My guess is he is filling up on forumla in the night and that is why he is not drinking or eating more during the day. My DD did the same thing. How many times a night does he wake up? How many ounces of formula is he taking in during the night? Does he always wake at the same time, or are the times always different? Can he put himself to sleep when he goes down for the night? Sorry so many questions, I just need some more information to help you better!  :)

Hi,
He wakes for his df and takes about 4oz, and then wakes again between 2-3am, usually i just resettle him, but the last couple nights he has only resettles with a bottletaking between2-3oz and up anywhere between 6-7:30am.  He took his bottle okay this am, about5oz but hasent had even 5oz since and it is know just after supper.  He usually doesn't want his am bottle at all.  Agsin I usually don't feed in the night after df, but last 2 nights not choice.
Yes, he does go for all his naps and to bed awake in his crib with no fussining, as well as the last 2 nights after having a couple oz of formula, he was still awakwhen i put him in his crib.
Is he using me as a prop??  Cause I know he is not hungery in the night, well he could be becaue of not eating great during the day but he still doesn't want it.  He loves his solids though.

Hi,
So I just remembered I didn't dreamfeed him last night.  So maybe it will help a bit if I post our sechedule from bed last night till bed tonight.

7:30pm- 1oz and into crib, I waited till he was asleep and finished feeding him as i knew he needed it just he was crabby, he took about 3oz
2;15 am- wake and i tried to settle then gave bottle at 3am took 3oz
7:30am-wake and 4oz bottle
8:30am-2T Cereal with 2oz formula, 1 egg yolk, and 1T Yougurt
9:00am-Nap
11:00am- wake
12:00pm-3T Veg and 3T Fruit
tried bottle at 12:30, 1:00, and then he took about 2oz at 1:30pm
2:00pm-Nap
3:45pm-wake, and tried bottle again, took about 2oz
5:00pm-2T veg, 2T fruit and 2T yougurt
6:50pm-Bath, get ready for bed, cuddle with dad
7:15pm-4oz(Surprising, past couple days not wanting it at all)and in bed

I don't follow the easy schedule to a tee but I use it as a guideline.  Normally bottles are when he wakes except for the ones b4 bed.  The past coule days I have just been trying to get formula in him when I can.  i have tried lowering the amounts of solids but makes no difference.  ds has never been a big eater but.....
A normal full feeding bottle for him is about 5oz, 6oz occasionally.

I think I ended up asking a couple questions in one in this post.
1) Is he getting enough formula for him/or is he at the age that solids should be #1
2)Is he using me and the bottle as a prop and how do I stop this?

If he is happy and gaining weight, then I wouldn't worry about the formula intake. He is getting a lot of nutrition from solids also. The yogurt will help him get more of the nutrients he needs also.

The waking though.... Since he isn't taking in much during the night then he is definitely not hungry. He is using you and the bottle as a comfort item. I know all too well. My DD did the same thing! Is he waking at the same time all the time? Always around 2 am? Check this thread out: https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=46907.0
This is what I did to stop the feeding. I would also stop the dreamfeed at this point. Stopping the dreamfeed actually helped stop our nightwakings/feedings. I hope this helps a bit. Check out the nightwakings threads. Sometimes you can find one that relates to what you are going through. You schedule looks great otherwise! Very similar to mine at that stage.

Hi,
Thank you for the reply.
I will go check out that other board.
So, hopefully I am not jinxing myself by taking about it but, ds slept though the night last night :-X
I didn't dreamfeed.  He woke around dreamfeed time and I just recovered him and and pat his bum for like 2 seconds and i didn't here from him again until 6:10 this morning.  He ate rather well this am as well.
I just hope it will continue :D
Cross your fingers for me
