still having feeding problem
« on: March 10, 2006, 15:20:35 pm »
Hi
My DS is 16 weeks old. He spits up a lot, so last week I tried enfamil AR, he got constipated. So, I heard that good start is easy to digest, and closest to breast milk, so I tried it, but it seems like he spits up even more than before. He was breast fed until just lately, he still gets one Breast feed/day as I'm still weaning. Because he spits up, it seems like he is hungry at 3-3.5 hrs. he has 5 feed/day about 7 oz each. sometimes 6, sometimes 8. he's not a big baby, he's between 13-14 lbs (was 5lbs 1oz @ birth, as he was born 3 1/2 weeks early) He used to be good on a 4 hr easy until lately. anyways, does anyone have any suggestion.

Here's his daily routine

0645-0700 awake and feed (breastfeed) will soon be over( does not spit up much)
0900 nap(45 min-1hr, still working wake to sleep for longer naps) not working well
1000 awake & feed 7oz formula
1145 nap(45 min-1hr .....)
1300 awake & feed 7oz formula
1500 nap(45 min-1 hr)
1700 feed 6-7 oz
1800 catnap(30-45 min)
1900 bath, 6-8 oz
2000 bed till morning

this was the approx routine for the past few days
I'm trying to feed 8 oz every 4hrs which would make 4 feed/day. He won't last that long. He gets agitated and fussy.
I know the naps are still an issue but working on them.
I've tried rice cereal and he loves it and does great but I feel he's too young to start giving every day, any suggestion and feeding tips.
thanks

Hiya
As he was 3.5 weeks prem, developmentally may not be ready for a straight 4 hrs EASY at only 12.5weeks (adjusted weeks), i would wait 3 or 4 weeks before trying a 4hrs Easy. It could be a 3 month growth spurt.

I agree with Lauren about the feeding times. My DD never got to a straight four hour routine until she was 6 months old. If he continues to spit up, I would consult your Pediatrician about what formula she or he thinks would be best for him.

Hi again
As fare as growth spurt I believe he had one 2 weeks ago as he was awake every hour for 2 nights in a row. That is when I upped his feed to 6-8oz. He could barely finish 4oz before that. All the other growth spurts were right on time too. 3weeks & 6weeks. And for the 4hrs easy, he did it all on his own, it's just in the past few days that he has been off on feeds.Past couple of mornings he woke up at 5am, I reswaddled and went back to sleep. One thing I didn't mention is he cries and fusses during feeds. It takes a few tries to finish bottle. It could be the bottles he doesn't like too. I bought Dr.brown's, can't wait to try them.
Could he be teething. He has a diaper rash. He never had one before. Could teething affect feedings. I know it's early but he has a few signs, chewing on hands, drooling.
