8 month not crawling
« on: March 10, 2006, 16:30:38 pm »
Not sure if I should be concerned at this point or not.  DD was 8 mons on the 7th of March.  She is mobile on the floor with scooting on her tummy, but not crawling.  She is not pulling up either.  Should I be concerned or is this normal?  She does not really like tummy time, but I try to play with her as long as she will.  She would much rather sit and play.  Any advice please.

My Will is exactly the same... he loves sitting with his toys playing and will toerate tummy time but shows no signs of crawling or movement yet and he is almost 8 months.
Try not to worry they all develop the incination and the skills of movement at different ages. I am sure other mommies and daddies will be able to tel us of some things we can do to encourage them in the right direction.

My little one is 10 months old and had started doing caterpillar crawling two weeks ago. I wish I could say that I was and am not stressed about it; my doctor tells me it is normal and not to worry. Crawling is not a Major milestone and he expects it form 10-12 months. BTW she is not puling up either.

Everyone tells me not to worry, but I guess we read so much and expect too much.  Of course, some babies never crawl.  I just want her to show some interest in pulling up, crawling, ect..  ::)  Thanks for the comments it helps to know that you are not alone in your worries!

they REALLY do just get there in their own time!  i would like to think that my brilliant skills (i work as a paediatric OT) would have made my son the first of the crawlers but he just isn't!!! he didn't start comando crawling til he was over 9 months and he just this week started occasional crawling.
if you HAVE got a comando crawler, i found it really helpful to assist Ethan into a crawling position by holding onto his thighs and placing them under his hips so he was on his hands and knees, if he collapsed we laughed and sometimes i could get him back up again by tickling his tummy.  he got better at supporting himself on his arms and eventually i moved his legs like he was crawling and helped him crawl into my lap.  he loved all of this.
the biggest thing that seemed to help in the past week has been playing in a foam pit at a local baby gym group... Ethan needed help to get out of the foam pit and had to move his arms and legs independently to balance and pull himself.  that's probably not so much help though, but you could try obstacle courses too once your lo can move about using the caterpiller or comando crawl method!
i would also say to try to work things through developmentally, ie, crawl before walking because each stage helps with control and skills that although aren't 100% necessary, make the next stage more efficient and easier.  definately don't worry tho!

Want to swap with my ds#2.... I'd love a less mobile child  ;)

my ds#1 hardly moved until 10.5 months & BOY do I wish ds#2 was the same... then I wouldn't have to deal with so many altercations. ds#1 walked by 14 months & runs & jumps etc fine now & actually walks up stairs in a one foot per step manner some of the time, which his cousin who is 9mo older doesn't.

I bet your dc have better speech or hand eye co-ordination or some other skill that other 8mo's don't have... ie ds#1 could roll a ball at 9mo & feed from a spoon at 10mo & his speech is that of a 3.5yo (he's 2.5yo) ds#2 has NO idea about doing the hand things like rolling a ball...So don't worry

Ryan never crawled at all , he bottom shuffled at 12/13months . it made life a lot easier for me as he couldn't master the stairs , he could lift his bottom enough to get over a little step . he got around pretty fast so i did have to keep an eye on him . he never pulled up onto his feet untill  15months . he never cruised around the furniture. he took a few steps at 17months and walked by the end of the week , that's when he stopped giggling as he was doing it . i wouldn't worry at all .

I think 8 months is about the avarige age to learn to crawl. My book says between 8 and 9 months is avarige and that "creeping" (catterpillering as i call it) usually comes just before crawling. My DS catterpillers so effectivly that although he gets up on hands and knees he always goes back to catterpillering (and rolling) to actually move! Ive got several friends with babies older than Tom and only oner of thems LOs crawled before they were 8 months (and 3 of them didnt crawl.. or even creep.. till they were 10 months).

You all can search back through posts and see my stress about Evan not Crawling. He FINALLY is crawling at 11 months. He went from laying on his back being pretty much useless to crawling, going prone sitting and vice versa, and pulling up in 2 weeks time. He still is a tentative crawler, more cautious than adventerous, but he's managed to smash his own fingers in a drawer and create a little mischief so dh and I figure he's not too far off base.

I Honestly think if they don't crawl early they are taking in life, figuring it out, before taking the plunge. My oldest is in some ways fearless, in some ways just doesn't "think" aka Reckless, the other two much more reticent, going to check everything out... IMHO a much better quality.

My son crawled for the first time 1 week before his first bithday. Before that, he would just roll and scoot to get where he wanted to go.  :)

Thank you all for your comments.  It always is nice to here positive thoughts.  DD is trying really hard to crawl, she has gotten up on all fours and moving back and forth.    So I will be patience and know it will come in time!  Thanks again
