Are these habitual wakings?
« on: March 12, 2006, 09:21:01 am »
For the last few nights and maybe longer I've noticed that DS is waking around 3 and 5.30am every night. It doesn't take very long to settle him (max 20mins). The wake time can vary by 10-15 mins each night. Last 3 nights have been 2.50, 3 and 3.10. The times aren't EXACTLY the same but the fact they are very close, does this mean its habitual? I've tried to leave him for a bit but his cries start to escalate until I go in. I've read that I should do wake to sleep and Tracy says to go in an hour before. Does it need to be an hour or can it be half hour? Anyone had any success with this? I don't want to find myself up for an extra time in the night.

it could be habitual, but it could also be due to hunger. Your LO is still quiet small and young and may not be ready to go the entire night without a feed.

I'd suggest you try to cut the first waking first, try using pat/shush or PU/PD to settle and feed for the second feed and see where that takes you. 2 times may be to much, but once isn't :)
Once you have eliminated the first waking you can work on the second.

Thanks for replying but I dont think its hunger. I haven't fed him in the night (apart from DF) for about 6 weeks now so I know he can go all night without food. I also don't think its hunger because he can be settled in just a few minutes. Surely he'd cry more if he was hungry.

I'll see what happens tonight. If its 3 again I'll try the w2s the following night. I think you're right that I should work on this one before the 5.30 one. Just hope he goes back to sleep very quickly after I've woken him! Fingers crossed!  :)

just make sure you don't wake him right up, only just rouse him slightly, enough so he is in a semi-consciouse state and you should be fine.

Hi
I'm having the same problem with my DS, he will be 4 months old, 1  week older than yours. And has been sleeping through the night for a while, 8pm-7am, and in the past week he wakes and just talks to himself. I have to go in and cover him then he drifts back to sleep. He feeds enough in the day. although his schedule has changed a bit. I'm suspecting my Ds is in the early stage of teething as he is showing some sings. Could that be it? What about you, any changes lately. I knew the sleep through the nights was too good to be true :)

Well I tried w2s last night at 2am and didn't hear a peep out of him ALL night! Couldn't believe it! Hope its not a fluke! Thought it might work for the 3 am waking but am amazed he didn't wake for the rest of the night!

Success again last night. Set the alarm for 2am and he slept ALL night.  ;D He was tired from previous night though and short naps yesterday. Big test will be tonight when I don't do it. Will let u know!

My DS had also woken up at 5am for the past 3 mornings (initially singing but it turns to crying with tears and all after 10mins), so I know now its a habit. He used to do it a couple of times a week and now for some reason he cant/won't go back to sleep - he usually sleeps through.

I think I will have to try w2s as well, I feel like a walking zombie!!

Well he slept AGAIN! I didn't do w2s to for now it seems to have worked. Funny how it doesn't work in the day for naps though! Good luck! I cna highly recommend it. Be warned though, I think I actually feel more tired for having a full nights sleep! LOL !
