Need weaning help please
« on: March 14, 2006, 19:42:49 pm »
Hello, I'm in the process of weaning my 7 1/2 month old.  It has been a struggle.  He used to take the bottle and suddenly decided not to.  After changing bottles he now takes an ounce very quickly and not much more.  At this point I have dropped all day time breast feedings offering only a 7pm bf before bed, a middle of the night bf (around 5am) and a first morning bf (around 7am).   During the day I am continuing to offer 3 'solid' meals and the bottle.

The problem is that he will only take 3-4 ounces of formula in total.  When we gave him the bottle in the past (when he used to take it in place of bf) he would usually take 8 ounces per feed.  Now he takes so little in a day.  I'm worried he isn't getting enough.  Any suggestions?

hi there, i was actually discussing this at my bf support group today!  The midwife there was telling us that many babies refuse to take ANYTHING from the bottle all day and wait for their evening feed!  Her advice to me was to increase the solids, i dont know if tis is applicable for you, i"ll be leaving my little one at childminders...im still feeding her myself and she very reluctantly takes 2oz from dh, just enough to keep going!  Have you tried him with a cup?

Thanks for your response.  Its good to know that its not abnormal.  But now my problem is how to remove the night and morning feeds if he won't take the bottle......I tried the sippy cup before changing bottles but he can only take a minimal amount of liquid from them (smaller amounts then the bottle)  Has anyone else encountered this problem when weaning?

Have you tried cutting back on his solids? It's possible that he's filling up on solids and isn't hungry for his bottle. Could you post approx amounts of his solids meals so we can rule that out?
