From formula to cows milk, how do I do it?
« on: March 14, 2006, 19:43:29 pm »
O.k. I know I'm being thick but how do I go from formula to cows milk? (I can't help it I'm blonde ;D ::))
My lo is 1 next week and I'm not sure whether I should gradually bring in cows milk or do I just finish what formula I have and go straight on to cows milk?
I was just reading some other posts and it got me even more worried, do I go straight to giving it from sippy cups or stick with a bottle?
When I signed up for kids no one warned me I'd be fretting over something that seems so easy :-[ :)
Any advise would be truly appreciated

Not sure either, I'm still trying to figure out if I should use follow on milk when DS is 6months or use his current formula?

Ive just changed William over to follow on milk but the Health Visitor said it was fine to keep him on the first milk as long as he gets iron from his diet and doesnt need to rely on the follow on milk for it... I decided to change to a follow on just in case when he turned 6 months as it is the same price as his first milk and tastes very similar.

I use Cow and Gate Omneo Comfort - and went from using 1 to 2

when it was time to switch to cow's milk we introduced one bottle at first , this was the morning bottle so we had all day to see how he was on it , also we wanted to use up any formula we had left . we then switched the evening one aswell when the formula was done. we had no problems with cow's milk but we changed to rice milk as it seemed to help with ryan's reflux and eczema .
Helen , i don't know if your h/v has mentioned this to you , but omneo comfort is hard on the teeth , so when William has teeth make sure you brush well . we tried omneo comfort at 6 months to see if it helped with reflux and our h/v said it would only be a short fix if it worked , as you shouldn't keep them on it ???  don't quote me on this , ask your h/v as ours hasn't been that supportive , i really don't seek advice from her now.

Calums mum: We changed to follow on for a bit but it seemed to make ds constipation worse so we went back to the same formula after our h/v said it doesn't make that much difference and that the follow on does tend to aggravate the stomach :(
I'm glad it's not just me whose stumped at this ;D
Ryan's mum: Thanks, that is a really good idea. I'll give it a try tomorrow morning :o I can't believe we are already there and Shay is no longer a baby :'( oh well time for the next ;D :o

I did the same as Ryan's Mom, but I also would put milk in her sippy with meals. That made the transisiton from bottle to sippy much easier. Then I just started cutting out the bottles. Mid-morning first, then afternoon, then morning and finally the nightime bottle.

Bella just turned a year and still won't take milk out of her sippy!  she is doing 2 bottle a day still, eventually, soon i will only be doing her bedtime bottle...bust she dosen't seem to like the taste of cows milk without some formula mixed in it.  how can i get her to just drink cows milk? she takes it in her cereal but won't drink it straight.

Hiya yes I have considered that - I did try a while ago to get him off the Omneo Comfort but the "normal" formula upset his tummy so much that I gave up and put him back to the comfort again. I have aready started to get him used to having his gums rubbed and something in his mouth so that I can brush his teeth - if he ever gets any hehe..

Thanks so much for thinking of me xxx

Also thanks for the advice about cows milk everyone.. I know Will is too young yet but I have often wondered how its best done. Its also interesting about rice milk since Will has excema - may be something to consider for the future.

OK so we tried cows milk out of a sippy cup this morning and Shay WOULD NOT drink it! ::) He would have a sip but then screw his face up and spit it out. The silly thing is I gave it to him with his cereal that had cows milk on it. I'm thinking of trying him with it in a bottle to get him used to having it or will that just make it harder as we will then have to go to a sippy cup eventually, should I just persevere with the cup? I have to admit I do like things to be done straight away ::) so babies are a real eye opener to patience ;D

Jennc123 if you get any advise let me know cos I think I'm going to be having the same problem as you :) We can battle it together ;D

When I first introduced cow's milk in Leah's sippy, she refused it too. It took about 2 weeks of milk in her sippy at every meal time before she got the hang of it. Persistance is the key. Also, if your LO is used to getting water or juice out of a certain sippy cup, you may want to introduce a different cup for milk. A straw cup is always nice - otherwise a normal cup that you hold. Leah LOVES to drink out of normal cups. She needs lots of assistance, but she thinks she's pretty cool drinking from a cup like Momma!

Even though we have a few months to go in this department their is some great advice here that i am definatly going to take on board. I have been wondering what is the best way to change over, i have heard some people to half and half first but then i also heard this can constipate them. Also the advice about giving it in a bottle first is a great one as well. My DD drinks water no worries out of a cup but i have tried her a few times with milk and she drinks a bit but prefers her bottle. So i think i will now wait until we go over to cows milk and drop the lunch bottle then persist with introducing the cup for milk.
