What do you all think of canned tuna?
« on: March 19, 2006, 00:08:21 am »
Hi,

My son is 14 months old. I want to give him tuna from the can to see if he likes it. We have all kind down here, smoked, with olive oil, with veggies, in water, etc.

What is the best one to give him and is canned tuna OK??

Thanks,
Amanda

I'm not sure which kind you choose matters much, but do keep in mind that tuna can have high mercury contents and medical officials warn not to consume it in great quantities.  When I was pregnant for instance, my obstetrician warned me not to eat tunafish more than once a week.  My sons eat tuna once a month maybe, perhaps twice a month.

I think the advise is to give the one in water and to only give it occassionally because of the mercury content.

Hey guys

My HV recently gave me a "baby feeding guide" that is by Cow & Gate. It shows that it is ok to give tinned tuna from 5 - 7 months old. It doesnt specify whether or not to give it if it is in brine tho. I gave it to my DD today for lunch with some cauliflower cheese all pureed up and she really enjoyed it. I used tuna in brine but ran it under the tap (in a sieve) for a few minutes.  :)

I occasionally use the tuna in sunflower oil. Mix it in with pasta and veg. No more than once a week though because of the mercury.

DD1 had canned tuna at 13 months in a tuna noodle casserole (with alfredo sauce, peas, and optional mushrooms).  She still loves it.  Let me know if you'd like the recipe
