qtn about swaddling and self soothing
« on: March 25, 2006, 01:47:39 am »
I have always swaddled my dd who is now 4 mos.  If you've read some of my other crazy posts You will also know hat she has only ever slept in her Car seat.

Now as I transition her to the crib I qtn to swaddle or not.  The first time i tried, wo the swaddle i found her to be flinching a lot, but also sucking on fingers and holding her blanky...

When i tried with the swaddle, she seemed to struggle a lot, tho she takes  a paci she often spits it out, and when she is swaddled she seems to be trying to turn her head from side to side trying to settle herself.  I sort of feel bad that she is all tied up so to speak,, :-[

So when does the fingersucking become efficient? when is it actually a soothing skill? right now she often gags herself on her fingers

Should i be leaving her free to learn? Or is she obviously not good enuf at it yet for it to be helpful to her.

I sort of feel bad changing the rules on her (car seat to crib) and she has no skills to help her thru it...  :'(

Leaving one arm out just seems to enable her to unwrap the rest of the swaddle.

Have you tried the "Aussie swaddle"?  Info is near the top of the forum.  Snuggly-wise, mine really likes to sleep sideways in the crib.  Then she has the side rails near her head and feet, and the head of the crib to one side.  Seems to be cozier that way.  Worth a try...     :)
