inhales water from sippy cup

my 11.5mo coughs and splutters when taking a sip of water (juice or formula) from his sippy cup.  has done since 6mo.  i thought he would figure it out in time, but have seen no change.

have tried different cups. 

is it a phase?

have you tried a straw cup, or a sippy with a trainer vent on it so the liquid doesn't come out so fast and your LO has to suck for it?

My dd still does this at 12mths. She does it whether it's a straw sipper or an open cup. Not sure what the deal is, but it's like she's drinking so fast and for so long and not breathing, then pulls off for a breath and sucks in the remainder of the water left in her mouth.  Happens almost every time she drinks.

hi lauren...  yep all the cups i've tried have had valves in them.  i don't even want to try one without yet.  and he still chokes on the straw and when drinking from a cup i'm holding.

nikki...  ok, so maybe lots of them do it???  thanks.  and you're right, it's usually the last mouthful.
