I used "more" constantly in eating, playing... I could tell he knew what the word meant but would never sign it. I have heard that "more" will probably be the first or one of the first signs your baby will make. That was NOT the case with us. It was more like the 35th sign he made!
With all signs, I do the sign numerous times before I give in to what it is. I try to get him to sign it before I give it to him. If he doesn't, at least he saw me sign it a dozen times! LOL! We also look through books after books where I point to an animal or object and ask him what it is. He looks to me to tell/show him what it is so we have that "connection". After doing that day after day one day, I will ask him what it is and he tells/shows me!
When I noticed Asher looking to me to teach him the sign I started using the words, "look at Mommy". Now, when I say, "look at Mommy" 98% of the time he looks at me knowing I am going to tell/show him something of interest to him. This has been VERY helpful! I can stop him in the middle of something and get him to look at me for instruction, a sign, a toy, help... VERY helpful!
I also taught Asher to sign for help. Because as a toddler there is so much they want to do but can't. I read that moms tend to jump in and automatically help when maybe the child was doing fine working it out on their own or doing it their way. I also learned that this jump in can cause your toddler to have a short fuse. The book said that your toddler should ask for help before you jump in. So, as Asher is growing into this toddler stage he can already ask for help. Something else that I thought was VERY helpful!
