Thanks. I knew of both. The first one is limited on words but is still helpful. The ASL browser is great but it kept freezing up on me and then I lost it and could never find it again. So, thank you for giving me those 2 sites again!

Does anyone know how to sign:

Crab?

Rhinoceros?

I'm new to this board, so I'm not sure if anybody has posted this link before, but I *love* this site for signs:  http://www.aslpro.com/cgi-bin/aslpro/aslpro.cgi  It's ASL, and it even has a section of "ASL for babies" with signs that might be particularly useful for a baby.  The videos are great, and even though my little one at 6 months isn't really ready to sign back, I've been enjoying starting to use a few signs with her.

Can I ask, how do you teach a sign like "more?"  I mean, obviously you can make the sign when asking, "Do you want more?"  But do the little ones really figure out what we're asking when we say/sign that?  Or do you walk over and pick up the carton/jar of food, hold it up, and ask "more?"  Or what do you do to make it clear that you want to know if the baby wants more?

SarahM - I say "more?" after each mouthful of food, before I give her the next. I'm hoping Ella will put it together with getting "more" food.

I try to make the sign as quickly as possible before showing her what it means, so there's no confusion over what I'm doing.  Only time will tell if it works!!

I try to think of it like Clicker training for dogs (sorry!!!), the right action, get a treat.  If you wait more than a few seconds the dog does not know what the treat is for!!!!!  Sorry bad analogy but I'm sure you know what I mean!

try to use it in asmany different situations too, like eating or playing.  when you are tickling or spinning or whatever you can pause say more? and then keep going.  expsue is really the key with all ASL.  the more they see it and experience it the faster things will go.  you always want to try to make time for signing throughout the day like if you see them staring at the ball you can go up to them get their attention and then sign is that your BALL ( sign what is caps.)?  do you want to PLAY with your BALL?  MOMMY with get your BAll for you.  then give them the ball and then say there is your BALL.  see hwo you can give them 3 signs in a short time with one little situation.  you want to look for that through out the day but using the sign more.  I hope that made sense. :D

I used "more" constantly in eating, playing... I could tell he knew what the word meant but would never sign it. I have heard that "more" will probably be the first or one of the first signs your baby will make. That was NOT the case with us. It was more like the 35th sign he made!

With all signs, I do the sign numerous times before I give in to what it is. I try to get him to sign it before I give it to him. If he doesn't, at least he saw me sign it a dozen times! LOL! We also look through books after books where I point to an animal or object and ask him what it is. He looks to me to tell/show him what it is so we have that "connection". After doing that day after day one day, I will ask him what it is and he tells/shows me!

When I noticed Asher looking to me to teach him the sign I started using the words, "look at Mommy". Now, when I say, "look at Mommy" 98% of the time he looks at me knowing I am going to tell/show him something of interest to him. This has been VERY helpful! I can stop him in the middle of something and get him to look at me for instruction, a sign, a toy, help... VERY helpful!

I also taught Asher to sign for help. Because as a toddler there is so much they want to do but can't. I read that moms tend to jump in and automatically help when maybe the child was doing fine working it out on their own or doing it their way. I also learned that this jump in can cause your toddler to have a short fuse. The book said that your toddler should ask for help before you jump in. So, as Asher is growing into this toddler stage he can already ask for help. Something else that I thought was VERY helpful!

I am so excited to be using baby sign again!  I signed with my older son, and he still remembers/uses many of the signs.  He is by no way delayed in his verbal speech.  He comes up with some amazing phrases!

My LO signed "all done" after eating.  I was excited to see him using sign, too.  My older son now wants to sign all the time to his brother.

I thought of introducing sign language a while ago, but gave up very quickly. my son is now 10 months, do you think there is any point in starting again now, or is it too late?

I don't think its too late at all!  Definately get him started in a class!  10 months is not too old at all!

I started at 10 months.  DS is now 13 months.  He is starting to sign back.  I think he understood some signs about 1.5 months ago.  Especially milk.
