6 week newborn on 4 hour schedule
« on: March 29, 2006, 00:49:08 am »
::) Just wondering...My 6 week old has been on a 4 hour schedule taking formula from the beginning. I cannot seem to wake her or keep her awake for 3 hour EASY. She wakes 1 to 2 times a night. I am wondering if working more toward the 3 hours will work better to keep her awake more during the day. I feel like I am fighting an uphill battle sometimes. At times, she shows sleep cues right after a feeding on the 4 hour EASY plan. She takes 3.5 to 4.5 oz per feed. I have been doing the cluster feeding in the eves when she takes it.

My little one was on a 4 hour routine by 8 weeks. If you post me your routine, I might be able to help. (No night wakings since then either).

4hr easy seems a long time for a 6 week old - they can't stay awake long enough to sustain the 4 hour routine, which means she is then possibly sleeping too much. When you say you can't wake her is this for the next 3 hr feed? If you let her sleep too much during the day you may find that days and night will become confused and she may start waking more to catch up on feeds at night.

1 to 2 times a night is really good for a baby this age.
If it were me I would more gradually back to 3hrs.

I have a DS that will be 8 weeks old this week and he has been on a 4 hour EASY since he was born.  I also have trouble keeping him awake once I have fed him and he also wakes 1 or 2 times a night (2 most nights).  He generally takes a full feed the first time he wakes up and only about 2 or 3 oz. the second time.  I tried cluster feeding once, but he only took .5 oz. after 2 hours so I never tried again after that.  He takes anywhere from 3 to 6 oz. every 4 hours.

I was think about moving to a 3 hour EASY to get him to take in more calories during the day so the night wakings would stop but am afraid that he will not take a full feed after only 3 hours and I will just have wreaked havoc on his schedule for nothing.

Have you tried moving to the 3 or 3 1/2 hour EASY?  If so, I would love to know how it is working out for you!!!  Good luck and if you find something that works for you, please keep me posted.
