carrots
« on: April 10, 2006, 03:43:10 am »
ok, so when bean was a bubba, i read that we shouldn't prepare and feed carrots because of the nitrates in them.  and only to feed them ready-made baby food carrots eg gerber, because they had the means to get the nitrates out.

anyone know when they are old enough to have real carrots?

Hi Susan,

I have to admit i have never heard of this before ??? I personally gave dd real carrots (cooked and blended) at around 5mths old when i started her on solids.  Carrots and swede mixed togeather was one of her favourites and she was fine with them.

HTH :)

The AAP and most sources I've read suggest that babies are able to properly digest and excrete nitrates around 8 mo.

I'd never heard that either - I think carrot puree was one of the first things that I gave dd when weaning her.

Here's an article derived from the AAP's research. Nitrates tend to be a problem in babies who drink well water but it's also an issue with certain vegetables like carrots and spinach.

I think maybe the advice/'rules' that we are given in the UK is differant to america.  I remember my HV was the one that told me that carrots are a good 1st food to start them on.....interesting though!

Babies can't digest raw carrots before 12 months. They are also too hard to chew. We are advised to start with carrots...

me and bean... I think you are right, it might be an American thing. Maybe baby carrots in the US aren't organic??? We only use the organic ones but even the ones that aren't organic say: "no gm ingredients" on them...

Carrots are best boiled or steamed with a bit of oil so that the baby can digest them and get the goodness out of them :)
