Tummy sleeping
« on: April 18, 2006, 16:35:32 pm »
I have recently started putting my six month old down on his tummy because it's the only way I can get him to (a) sleep without his miracle blanket (which he was spending all night trying to get out of anyway), and (b) sleep through from dream feed at about 11 and 5.30am (rather than waking every 2 hours!). He can roll on both sides, back to front and front to back. He is very strong and can lift his whole torso off the bed, as well as doing great sit-ups when he's on his back. Has anyone else resorted to tummy sleeping before 1 year? Any advice as to whether it's too early? I must say it has changed my life for the better  :), but I'm obviously worried aboiut SIDS  :-\.

Hello!
My dd is only a few days younger than you son. My daughter has been rolling to her tummy for several weeks now and I have stopped even trying to roll her back during the night. So...my dd has been sleeping on her belly for a couple of weeks too.  I have read and heard that once your lo can roll over than there is little need to worry. I have also read that the risk of sids drops by a large percentage once your lo is 6 months old. I have my daughters 6 month pedi visit tomorrow and I plan to ask my Dr. as well. I will let you know if I hear anything different, but I don't think you have to worry about letting your son sleep on his belly!  ;)

Hi there!

My Lo is also a tummy sleeper but cannot roll over. I was very worried about SIDS but this was the only way she would sleep due to her poor tummy problems. We invested in an AngelCare Monitor. The monitor goes under the mattress and an alarm goes off if the baby stops breathing. It is quite costly (about $100.00 Canadian) but has put us at ease!!! As Shellliz had written, I also heard that if your baby is rolling back and forth, there is little to worry about but I thought I'd mention this monitor in case you are still apprehensive!

I also have the Angel Care monitor.  I think it is a wonderful investment. I used it up until my dd was 3 months old.  I must admit, however, I don't even have it hooked up at the moment :-\.  But...I think that that monitor is wonderful for any tummy sleeper (or all babies for that matter!) I certainly puts a mom's mind at ease!!

We have the same monitor.  We are just now thinking that it's time to turn off the motion sensor as dd wanders all over the crib in her sleep.  Great for peace of mind!!

My daughter has just starting doing tummy sleeping as well...since we've gotten her out of her swaddle when I lay her down she flops to her side and curls up with her bear and then during the night she will go  farther onto her side with her arms tucked under her and then eventually completely on her tummy.  The only thing is that she hasn't mastered flipping back the other way, so she has started getting frustrated because she wants the bear back and can't get to it easily ::) - but i'm not overly worried about her on her tummy, and actually would prefer she master it soon because i think it suits her better.
