12 month old refusing food!!
« on: April 27, 2006, 08:59:10 am »
Hi,

Help!!

I'm pulling my hair out with my DS.  He's 12 1/2 months old.  At the moment, he is refusing his meals and has been for a while now.

I offer him weetabix/porridge for breakfast with a few fingers of toast.  Lunch is normally a cooked dinner (cottage pie/sheperds pie etc) and dinner will be finger foods.  He does seem to enjoy finger foods more, but he picks certain foods and leaves veggies.  I've tried cutting out his snacks to see if thie helps, but it doesn't.

The times I offer his foods are:

6.30am milk
7.30 - 8.00am breakfast
12.00 lunch
4.30 - 5.00pm dinner
7.00 milk

Should I be offering his meals with longer intervals between the last?  Also, I didn't know whether to drop his first milk?

Help!!

My 13 mos old also refuses food, but it tends to be at late afternoon/dinnertime. We're experimenting with switching around her meals (dinner foods at breakfast, breakfast foods at lunch, etc)

How does your son go such long stretches without a snack? My little girl has to "graze" all day.

There tends to be a huge drop in appetite around 1 yr, and that's often when they start eating air for several days only to eat you out of house and home for the next few days. And it's pretty normal to eat progressively less and less throughout the day. Tyler still does this...he'll eat an obscene amount of food for breakfast, an okay lunch, then 2 bites for dinner. I think the intervals between his meals looks fine if you think he does okay without snacks. Some toddlers have tiny tummies and like to eat small bits at a time every couple of hrs, and some do better on a routine like yours. Is he drinking milk in between meals? That can often be very filling and can kill an appetite. Also, how much milk is he having first thing in the morning? Is it formula or whole milk? It's up to you when you eliminate that and the bedtime milk...you might find that his appetite improves once those are gone.

As long as he seems healthy otherwise and isn't losing weight, I wouldn't worry too much. As long as he's eating SOMETHING, he'll probably come around once he hits a hungry phase.
