How do I get her to sleep in bed with us?
« on: April 27, 2006, 19:46:11 pm »
So we're taking a short trip in about a month and I want to limit the gear that we lug with us.  I'm thinking that for the short time that we're gone, we'll just have DD sleep in bed with us (it's a king bed) versus having to take or borrow a travel crib for her.  I know it's AP, but I don't think it will take much retraining to get her to sleep in her crib once we get home.  But, she's never slept in bed with us.

Should we really NOT do this?  Is it going to screw up her bedtime routine and be a problem when we get home?
If we do it, how?  She sees us as her "awake-time" mates - not sleepytime bedmates.  I'm concerned that she'll have a hard time settling with us around.  Not to mention that she's such a sqwirmy girl that sleeping might be tough for all of us...

Any advice?

fwiw... *i* wouldn't do it.  none of you is used to it, and i think you'd all be too disturbed to sleep.  but that's just me.   ;D

btw, at most hotels you can just ask for a crib & they will give you one.  usually about the size of a travel crib.  but if you're staying in someone's house, i'd try & see if anyone on that end can lend you one.  if not, i'd just bring your own.

my 2 cents!   :P

You could probably tell that I was trying to convince myself too.  You're probably right...I can see me sending DH to an all-night Target to get a travel crib cuz we're all out of sorts.  At least that way, we'd only have to lug it home...I'll check with the hotel and see what they have.

Personally I wouldn't do it either. It could very well turn into a prop when you get home and you'd have to start from scratch :)
Do you have a playpen?? Ours comes with a bag for easy storage, its small enough for travel, but large enough for your LO to sleep in.

IMHO i would deffinetly not do it. I can imagine the 3 of you are gonna have the crappiest nights ever, just picture it: you put katie to sleep after her bedtime ritual... then you are gonna go to sleep to, lay next to her, and you are you gonna think while trying to sleep "OMG if i move i can crush her in my sleep", and so will think your DH, as for Katie, well any sudden movements you have, or DH as for that matter, she can probably wake up, 'cause she's not used to have external movement while she sleeps... and what IF you DO hit her when you move your arms?!!! 'cause you are just not used to that either!!!! oooohhhh i would deffinetly not do it... but that's just MHO  ;)

I think pretty much every hotel has a crib that's something you'd be happy with. Also some travel cots like the pop-up one are amazingly teeny. I think if you're not used to it you may find you don't sleep well and it affects your holiday pretty badly (and this is from someone who actually thinks co-sleeping can be a lovely thing. I only do it in a mattress on the floor in a child-proofed room with a super-safe bedding arrangement).

As tracey said Casey "start as you mean to go on". If you have her on a good routine in her crib and I wouldn't want to mess with it. I would, however, be hesitant about using motel cribs because I would worry about whether it has been well maintained or how old it is. Playpens have become very portable these days. I would stick with that instead.
