When to move from four feeds to three?
« on: May 03, 2006, 16:23:58 pm »
Hi all,

DS currently eats at 7am, 11am, 3pm and 7pm (give or take!).

We're upping solids to 3 meals a day at 8am, 12pm and 4.30pm (ditto  ;) )

I was wondering when I might try moving to three b/f a day? It seems that some LOs do around the 8 to 9 month mark. Are there any signs I should be looking out for? Yesterday's 11am feed was 11.30am due to running around, and I noticed that DS really had a good guzzle, much more focused than usual at that time.

I'm also asking because I'm heading back to work in about four weeks (just as DS hits 8.5 months) and a different feeding pattern would mean I could feed him more myself, rather than relying on EBM.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Katy

My LO is 8.5 months old and has 3 nursings a day. Our schedule
0515 awake and nurse
0730 fruit and cereal at daycare
0900 EBM 5-6 oz at daycare
1100 veggies and meat at daycare
1200 EBM 5-6 oz at daycare (sometimes only takes 4 oz)
1500 EBM 5-6 oz at daycare
1630 veggies and meat, finger food at home with sitter
1730 nurses

On the weekends, he sometimes drops a feeding. I would prefer the bulk of his calories to be from BM; so I have't pushed dropping a feeding. A few weeks ago his bottles were nearly 7 oz each. Through feedback from daycare and a dip in supply- I've been sending less and he is doing OK. Maybe let him iniate nursings for a couple of days to gauge his appetite?

I checked with my LC at 9 months how many feeds, she said that 4 feeds a day was the norm at 9mth, dropping to 3 at around the 10-11 mth mark.  I dropped down to 3 when he started going for the am nap later and ended up sleeping closer to lunch time.  I decided that if he woke before 11.30, i'd feed, or if after that, I'd do early lunch.

If you drop it down to 3 feedings a day appx how many oz (what are the miniumum requirements for this age?)?? Are your babes sleeping through the night and actually having only 3 nursing and/or bottle a day? How much food and snacks should they be eating?
