how often?
« on: May 03, 2006, 20:17:51 pm »
Hello! I am a new mum.My baby is three weeks old and I am very happy to be able to breastfeed him. His weight by now seems to be ok, but we have a problem. Every one gives me a different advise about it. Gabriel througs out once in a while, twice heīs througn out really hard. Iīve been told to feed him every two hours minimum and four maximum. But others have told me to feed him every time he wants to. It sometimes is every two or three hours, but sometimes every 1 and 1/2 hour. I think I Know when he cries for hunger, though I am not perfectly sure. Also Iīve been told that throughing out is normal at his age, but I donīt know if I am feeding him too much. I'd appreciate very much your help.
PD:sorry for my English.Itīs not very good.

Congratulations on your new baby!!!  How exciting!!!!!

The EASY method would support you nursing every two hours to four hours.  The other nursing schedule you mentioned sounds more like nursing on demand.  It is your choice what you want to do.  I would opt for the every two hours to four hours.  This ensures your baby is taking a big feed and filling his belly.  If you listen to the swallowing of your little boy you will hear his pattern and hopefully be able to tell when he is full.  Just listen and you will learn it I imagine.

About the throwing up, it is quite common for some babies and there is nothing medically wrong, for other babies, there is something wrong.  Most common, I believe, would be reflux.  There is a section on this website dedicated to it.  I think other symptoms are that the baby doesn't like being on their back, that they cry after a feed, etc.  I am not saying this is what your little one has, I'm just saying that you should be aware of what babies can suffer from.

By the way, you will receive much advice now that you are a mom.  Take what you want and throw away the rest.  This site is really helpful for figuring out what will work best for your little one.

I would suggest reading Tracy Hogg's book the Baby Whisperer, she really helps you learn to understand your little one.

Good luck

Just to add that when your baby is very young 2-3 hours is very common. When he is growing more it may be more like 2 hours for a few days. When he is older it will change to 3-4 hours.

Throwing out milk is very normal for may babies. If he doesn't seem unhappy then I wouldn't worry.
