Finger Food - Fruit Slices?
« on: May 05, 2006, 23:20:39 pm »
We are starting to try finger foods with DD as she's really not so interested in purees right now. If we give apple and pear slices (she's had both as purees before) do we need to cook first to make softer? Microwave a few seconds? And then coat in cereal so not slippery? Any suggestions?

I've been giving DD applesauce during the past couple of months, but this morning I decided to give her a real apple. It was a Fuji apple, and noticed that it wasn't too "hard". I cut it up into small bits to start out, they were about 3 to 5 mm cubes. She ate them fine. Tomorrow I will try making the cubes a little larger, gradually increasing the size. I gave her the apples straiight, not coated in anything.

Does it matter what kind of apple I use? Is an organic granny smith apple OK?

Might be a bit sour.  On the other side of it, she might really like that.  Mine got a kick out of not very sweet grapes.   Go figure.   ::)

My test was always to gum the food myself and see how soft it was. I'd stick a chunk of apple, pear, or whatever in my mouth and use my tongue to smush it against the roof of my mouth. Sounds weird, I know, but that's what babies do with their tongues and gums when they "chew." If I could mush it up without much effort, then the food was soft enough. If not, I'd cook it a bit.

I would still cook it a little to soften them a bit especially apples, softer fruit would be ok to each uncooked.
