WEANING AT 23 WEEKS?
« on: May 08, 2006, 15:34:43 pm »
Hi,
I hope that someone can help me with this...

I have a dd of 23weeks who I am bf but am now supplementing with 2 night feeds of formula (tried Aptamil but was allergic so she is on Cow & Gate Omneo milk)

I think she is showing signs of being ready for weaning. The only thing is, is I am going on holiday in 5 weeks so do I start now (before 6 months) or do I wait until I come home when she'll be nearly 7 months?

I'm am worried about starting her on food too early as she has had a reaction to formula. On the other hand I don't want to start too late as I have heard it's not good for their jaw muscles and can hinder speech.  ???

The worry I have is I'm not sure how I will make her food up on holiday (will the hotel be using salt/sugar in the food preparation?)
I'm sure I'm being ott about this weaning business but I really don't know what to do for the best? I don't want to be stressing on holiday about dd's food times - especially when up until now it's been so easy - just whop a boob out and hey presto!!

Has anyone been in this situation? Has anyone weaned whilst being away from home? If I started her now will I be able to use jars just for the week on holiday (although I would prefer to use fresh food)?

I would really appreciate some experience here!

Thanks

You could go either way and still be fine, I think. I hadn't heard that delaying solids could lead to jaw and speech problems...that's a new one for me! If it were me, I think I'd go ahead and start her now, or you could even wait a couple more wks. You would know pretty quickly if she had a reaction to solids, and that would mean that she's not ready yet or that particular food didn't agree with her.

As for when you're on holiday, it's actually pretty easy to keep up solids. I wouldn't introduce any new foods while you're away, just keep rotating through what she's already had and done well with. You could easily just give her different kinds of infant cereals mixed with breastmilk, formula, or water the entire time you're away. That would keep things really simple. If you hadn't given her jars before your trip, I don't know if I'd try them for the first time while you're away, given her prior reactions to formula. If there's a store nearby, you can easily pick up some very ripe bananas or avocados and mash them up really well with breastmilk or formula. There are also lots of inexpensive mini blenders that are battery operated and small enough to fit in your diaper bag. You can take one with you to get a really good, smooth puree from very ripe fresh fruit.

I also found that in those first couple months of solids, it was easy to be flexible. Before we started solids, he'd let me know LOUDLY at the 4 hr mark when he was hungry. On solids, we were able to be more flexible with his eating times, since he ate so much more often during the day and never got super hungry.

Hi,

Thanks so much for your reply. That has really helped. Great advice and I feel a lot better about things.  ;D

I was a bit apprehensive about using jars but I will seek out some fruit and veg and mash up my own. By then she'll be 27-28 weeks so able to eat well mashed food rather than puree hey?

I will start her on the baby rice today and see how it goes. We had an up and down night again last night so I'm thinking that dd needs a bit extra to see her through the night.

Thank you!
