dream feed saga continues: give up cluster feeding?
« on: May 10, 2006, 13:41:12 pm »
I first tried cutting out the df at 6.5 mos.  I weaned as Tracy suggested, including cluster feeding since I bf.  She wasn't ready b/c she awoke early (4:00 or 5:00).  She's almost 8 mos. now, and she still can't make it from 7-7, so I do a df at 8:30 or 9 (I do it early so as to drop it more easily - used to do it at 11).  Last night I did it at 8:30.  She awoke at 4:30, but usually she'll make it 'til 7 w/ the df.

Anyway, since I'm in the perpetual state of trying to wean the df, I'm always cluster breastfeeding at 3,5, and bedtime (around 7).  I'm afraid to stop clustering, b/c I'm afraid she'll go to bed late enough to try again w/out the df, but she won't have enough calories.  She's also eating solids at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m., so I'm stuffing her as much as I can (when she's hungry).

Dd's routine (7 mos. 3 weeks):
E 7:00 bf
E 8:30 solids
S 9:00-10:30 nap
E 11:00 bf
E 12:00 solids
S 1-2:30 nap
E 3:00 bf
E 4:15 solids
E 5:00 bf cluster
E 6:15 solids
E 7:00 bf tankup and BED

So my question is, should I stop clustering?  If so, when would I start again?  My goal is to eliminate the df, though I'm not in a rush.

Hi Court, not sure what other advice I can offer, so I'll leave this one open to the others, sorry!

i probalby wouldn't give up cluster feeding.  i don't remember exactly when i stopped... maybe 8 months??  but every baby is different.  if she is still waking in the night, it is perfectly okay to try & tank her up during her waking hours.  what you're trying to avoid is snacking; as long as she's taking full feeds while you cluster it's okay.

I stopped the cluster feeds.  I knew intuitively that it was best.  She takes a fuller feed at 7, and she eats a TON of solids in the evening:  essentially cluster feeding w/ solids instead of milk.  We're still doing a 9:00 df, but at least the clusters are gone, and she makes it through the night just fine.

thanks for your help!
