Huge desperate help with eating prop!
« on: May 11, 2006, 14:40:20 pm »
Ok so I went to work this week as a teacher helping a friend of mine who went on vacation so I left dd with my MIL as my mother was taking care of my niece as she is sick. So my dd was a little sick too and she was staying with MIL from 7:30 am till 3 pm just this week. She only was sick one day and now she is perfect.  So today for her breakfast she didnīt wanted to eat so I call MIL and asked her if she did something different and she said: "She didnīt wanted to eat with me so I had to entertain her so I gave her toys and keys and acted infront of her, and she immediatelly opened her mouth" So I tried it and she did open her mouth with a toy... I realised that everytime I show her a toy she opened her mouth as a reflex...   >:(
So she got used to this!!!!!
Please tell me how to get rid of this terrible terrible eating prop????
I do not want to make her eat with toys from now on... so any suggestions???
My MIL said that all her children were entertained babies at feeding time and that it is so normal... "We had to do a whole CIRCUS show so they would eat" I do not want to be like that.
pLEASE HELP ME....

Well, I'm a firm believer that if she's hungry, she'll eat. I agree with you, I'm not a big fan of the circus routine at mealtimes either! Try sitting her down to eat and if she doesn't open her mouth after a minute or 2 or starts to fuss, take her down from the high chair. Offer her a meal again in half hour or so and do the same thing. She may well skip a meal or 2, but she'll be fine as long as her breast/bottle intake is still okay. It shouldn't take too long for her to associate meals with eating and not playing again!

I agree with Melissa, if shes hungry she will eat.
I ahve been having problems with Phoebe not eating her lunch and onlt little at teatime, she was weating brekkie.
Yesterday I dropped brekkie, I gave her 7oz bottle. No food until she showed sogns off hunger, which was about 1030 and boy did dhe eat her lunch (all of it , off the spoon). She has not done this in weeks for me. Same for her 1700 meal, all gone and guzzled a 7oz bedtime bottle. She only has 2 bottles day.

Today was exactly same but she had lunch later at 10.50am. Tomorrow the same hoping lunch a little later.
Day 4 I will introduce a light brekkie of fruit and yoghurt.

She did not miss the brekkie and if anything she is a lot happier as getting all meat, veggies etc

Hope this helps

That is why I am worried, she is at 2 bottles too...
So I will wait till she is hungry even though she is fussy all day long because she is hungry? Or do I offer cookies instead of real food... or I just go with her flow and do not offer snacks?   ???

Even if she's been fine for a few days, it can still take awhile for things to get back on track after illness. If she's fussy from hunger, then she'd probably eat, so I'm thinking that she's either not back to feeling like herself yet or is teething. I'd just offer her what you usually would, and I wouldn't resort to cookies just for the sake of getting her to eat. You run the risk of creating another problem...a DD who only wants cookies!

You didn't mention how long it's been since she was sick. I'd say if she refuses eating either solids or bottle for more than a few days or starts to lose weight, a call to the dr might be in order. But for now, I'd guess that she's still not back to feeling well yet.

Hi!!! Thanks on your replies... Just came from the doctor... she is increasing her weight just fine!!!
She is not sick at all and no teething... She was sick last week on Wednesday and not anymore.
So she only got used to be entertained. Today she seemed hungry so I feed her, I was at my MILs and I feed her with no toys and she did not wanted to eat so my MIL took my place and she fed her with toys and she ate and ate and ate everything happily!!!!
She is having her 2 bottles just fine the way it usually was, but solids.... She needs a toy...  >:(
Should I keep offering without toys until she gets back on track again...and if she does not want leave her?  I so hate to leave dd with someone else!!!!
Thanks

I would not offer a toy as feeding times can be fun with food, when you bring in a toy it gives the message that it is extended playtime and it can cause problems at later date. Would giving her a spoon to play with help as at least this is associated to feeding (sorry if you have tried this already). She could get involved with putting food into mouth. I know she is young but it may work.
