What do you do when you're camping?
« on: May 11, 2006, 20:19:14 pm »
We like to camp and want to camp and I thought that DD and I would just share the upper bunk in our camper and DH would take the lower bunk (smaller bed and actually more risk of falling).  But, we have never co-slept and when I posted about co-sleeping for a trip we're taking next month, most folks thought we should avoid it (and I agree since it's an anomoly that none of us are used to).  But, what about camping...do I have to take a portable crib with me and somehow fit it in the camper?  What do you do?

Hi, I'd have thought the portable crib would be the best option all round, as long as you let your DD get used to sleeping in it for a couple of nights before you go. Co-sleeping whilst you are away, may develop a habit, hard to break when you return, or it simply may not work, if your DD has not been used to it. Habits can develop within a few days. I know that when on a few occasions I have tried to co-sleep, for various reasons, it just did not work, and neither of us slept. If you can fit the crib in or get a smaller one, I'd go for thsi option.

I have to agree with Chell.  My two year old DS has never co-slept with us and the few times we went away (when he was little) and attempted to have him in the bed with us turned into a disaster.  He just wouldn't stop playing (tried constantly to get our attention) and he woke earlier in the morning than if he was in the porta crib.  The last few times away we have slept him in a blow up kids sleeping bag on the floor and he has done great.  WE didn't try that until he was two and able to follow our verbal directions (i.e STAY IN BED).  Also, the sleeping bag takes up less room and can be hidden well during the day.  At least I can say that he sleeps well in his own bed.  I guess we succeeded there.  Hope you figure out what is best.  A sleepless vacation isn't very fun!

We are having the exact problem!  We love camping and have only been able to camp one weekend so far.  That weekend we did co-sleep and seemed to have some problems after we came home with her sleeping.   So I am thinking when we go back I will take the portable crib.  She is 10 months old and I know she will get better with age.  HAPPY CAMPING!!! ;D

Maybe we should skip it this year.  The only place I can figure out to put a porta-crib is on the table and that just isn't safe.  Sometimes it's enough of a vacation if you're just away from work!

Is the table removable, could you put it somewhere else or even outside overnight  ???

It's not removable unfortunately.  It does collapse down to the same level as the cushions and converts to a bed.  I was wondering about using bed guardrails like when you switch from a crib to a toddler/twin bed.  I think they are held in place by the LOs weight though and I'm not sure a 9MO would weigh enough to hold them in place.

I wouldn't give up camping I am sure that you can figure something out.  You could make a pallet on the floor and block it with a baby gate???
