short wake times and short naps
« on: May 13, 2006, 17:29:22 pm »
Hi.  I am new to this site.  I have a question about my 10 week old son.  He is sleeping now from 10:00pm until 7:00am, with no more nighttime feedings.  However, during the day, he can only handle being awake for an hour at a time before he starts getting really fussy and tired.  I usually pick him up when he gets fussy, and then he eventually starts to get drousy.  If i don't pick him up, he starts to scream almost immediately.  When he gets drousy, I swaddle him and put him in the crib.  Sometimes he cries, sometimes not.  However he only sleeps for 45 minutes to an hour, then wakes up.  At first I thought is was because he was hungry because he does eat pretty good.  But most of the time he closes his eyes again when I start to feed him.  Then the whole process starts over again.  Eats, awake for about an hour, fussy, drousy, back to crib.  This goes on all day.  And he is usually miserable when he is awake.  Should I try to get him to sleep longer for his naps?  Or is this normal sleep patterns for a baby his age?

I remember when Ella was around that age she was doing the same thing, slept well at night but my daytimes were very similar to yours, can't stay up long enough so the naps were short. I felt pretty frustrated at that time, but slowly she was able to stay up longer thus allowing the naps to lengthen out, it just takes time. You can try the different methods of extending the nap such as wake to sleep, or being there as they come out of the sleep cycle to help them through or pat/shh if he does get up earlier than the atleast 1.5-2 hour nap. That is your choice though, for some with a lot of patience, it works and works really well, myself I had no patience with the methods and just dealt with the short naps until eventually at around 4 months she started being able to stay up longer thus allowing the naps to lengthen. It's up to you and your personality with dealing with either.

He sounds like he is a great baby and you are doing a super job with him! His nighttime sleep sounds great for his age, actually better than most his age as a lot of them are still feeding at night.

Are you putting him to bed at 10pm or are you df him at that time, just a question because as he gets older you may want to pull his bedtime slowly back to earlier if you don't have an earlier one already.

Let me know what you decide ;D

I usually put him to bed at ten because that is when he starts to get tired/fussy.  I have a routine: eat, bath, a little play, and then he lays on my bed and watches my ceiling fan and the tv until the fuss begins.  Then he is swaddled and put in his crib.  I let him cry for a little if he doesn't fall right to sleep, but he has never cried longer than 5 minutes before he falls asleep on his own.  I'll try to get him to nap for longer, but probably just deal until he gets a little bit older.  Thanks for the reply!
