formula dripping everywhere
« on: May 27, 2006, 20:00:16 pm »
my daughter is 14 weeks.  She has been on the bottle for the past 6 weeks.  About 3 weeks ago i switched her to the number 2 nipple because she was fussy and wanted a faster flow.  The first couple of days she gagged but not since.  The problem is she has always dripped the formula all over herself since i switched nipples.  I have her in a bib (thick one) and use a small cloth under her chin.  She still gets formula on her clothing through all of that.  Any ideas what i can do to stop the dripping??  I thought she would stop over time but she hasn't

I suggest you return to the slower flow and put a small pin prick in the teat until your LO can handle the faster flow. ;)

Hehe I spy another mommy who has used Avent teats and ended up with a LO covered in milk... I used to think it would be easier just to pour the milk over Will as he would end up covered in it anyway!!!
I switched to Dr Browns / B-free and they were fantastic - no more dribble!

I am actually not using advent.  I am using the playtex bottles with the vent on the bottom.  I am concerned with putting another hole in it.  Doesn't that make the teat weaker and maybe it will rip?  Silly question but where would be the best place to put the hole? Near the other one, off to the side or does it not matter?

Hi - I used those bottles first off with DS, and well they started leaking a few weeks into using them.  I found apon inspection that the bottle itself cracks at the rim (very tiny cracks) and then the whole bottle leaks regardless of what you do.  I got rid of them all and got Dr Browns.

I dont' know if that's what happened to yours, but check it out.

I put it near the existing hole, you need to replace teats every so often anyway so they should never get to the stage were they rip or tear. I replace all mine again last week becasue the latex was starting to perish and become sticky after being in the steamer.

KylieMom - we also dealt with dribbling (used Avent) for the first couple of weeks, until we started using Gerber Nuk bottles. And voila, no more dribbling! Good luck.

kyliemom - We started DS on the playtex ventaire bottles first also, ours leaked from the bottom though.  If you are using the blue tinted nipples, I don't recommend poking another hole.  The packaging warns against it because it may rip while feeding and lodge in baby's throat posing a choking hazard.  We switched to Avent and these leak from the neck if you don't get the tops on just right, but I wasn't spending any more $$$ on bottles, so we have used them since and I just test them over the sink before feeding.

try the platex advance drop in bottles insted :) There really good and no gas for baby, and no leak. The slow flow is faster then with the advent slow flow so they shouldn't leak as much. We used them for DD, still do. Dr.Browns are to expensive and only come her when my DD was 4 months, and the avent always causes a LOT of gas problems.
