Baby not eating as much?
« on: May 31, 2006, 00:40:50 am »
My LO is 7 weeks old & since trying to put him on easy he is now not as interested in his bottle it seems.  For the last few weeks I had no problem with him finishing a 4 oz bottle every 2.5 - 3 hrs but in the last 2 days I'm having problems, he's only finishing 1/2 of it.  It's probably a coincidence, but do babies kind of revert back before going forward for feeding? I thought maybe he was having a growth spurt & that's why he was finishing bottles off no problem & now he's maybe taking 3 oz at the most.

Have you tried a bigger size nipple on the bottle?  My LO was doing the same thing, dropped her intake by half, once I got her on the faster flow nipple she was back taking 6oz again.

That crossed my mind.  He just doesn't seem to be sucking effectively, sometimes it's almost like he's using it as a soother.  I have some fast flow nipples here that I'm going to try on the next feeding when he wakes up.

Did your lo need a fast nipple this early?  I just thought 7 weeks seemed kind of early?

Yup, she was exactly 7 weeks when this started.  I remember because she was 2 months old and I thought it was kind of early too.

That didn't make a difference, in fact he cried during the feed with the fast flow nipple.  The only time he's sucking the bottle dry is at his 5 am feeding.

my 2 month old was eating like clockwork during the day, 4oz, every 3/4 hours but during the past 2 weeks I too cannot get her to eat even 2 oz every 3/4 hours. She is smiling, peeing and pooping normally. She gets fussy around 5 pm and stays that way until she finally goes to bed at 8pm. She doesnt nap as well during the day either. It seems that the easy routine was working so well and all of a sudden its completely turned around. We live in phoenix where its 100+ degrees now. Could heat be a factor? This sounds silly, but do babies eat less when going through a growth spurt? HELP!!!

as long as she is doing all of those things don't worry. babies appetites vary greatly evn at this age.My DD at that age would sometimes take 2-3oz other times 5oz. but as she was putting on weight was alert etc i didn't worry too much.its difficult in the early days with a routine as they have so many growth spurts, teething etc

what flow was he using b4. possibly the fast flow too fast giving him wind ???. not sure what btls you are using. in uk we have slow, medium and fast and also variflow.

I'm using the playtex liners & they only come in fast & slow.  I just switched him back to soy which is a thicker formula & the fast flow nipples work fine with it (slow flow gets clogged with it).  He's still very eratic with his eating, sometimes 2 oz, sometimes 3 oz & sometimes 4.  ???  He just woke up at 9 pm after a 3 hour break between feeds & I made him a 4 oz bottle & he only 2 oz, I'm gonna go back in at 10ish & try to feed him the other 2, I know 2 oz won't hold him very long for night time sleeping.

He too is gaining weight, smiling, alert & cooing, except at our 5 pm "witching" hour in which he is very cranky but I hear that is normal.  I just sit with him on the couch at that time since there is no point trying to put him in his crib, he just wants to suck his soother & cat nap & at least I can sit on the couch with him that way & quietly watch TV.

He's at the Dr on Wednesday so I will talk to her when I'm there.

Have you considered switching to a 3.5 hour EASY? it may be that he's snacking and can go longer between feeds. Thats about the age when I had to switch my DD over.

Also with the platex bottle's there is a try cut nipple. They work really well and help your LO control the flow. I use the same bottles and I started using the try cut at about 2 months.

I was just at BRU yesterday & didn't see the tricut nipples, but the fast flow are working so I'll just stick with that.  The avent bottles I have work too so I have some options.

He woke this morning at 8:30 to start our day (was up at 1:30 & 5 am for feeds) & again only took 2 oz and went back to sleep.

Maybe he's just not a big eater & was only finishing off the 4 oz bottles because he was having a growth spurt?

About the tri-cut nipples.... I tried them but she seems to drink a lot slower with them.  She also drinks a lot slower when I tried a sippy cup.
