5 week old sleeping patterns
« on: June 05, 2006, 20:36:33 pm »
Hi -

I am new to the board after seeing the show.  I am BF my LO and he is a pretty good sleeper at night.

It is the morning that I am concerned about.  I do try to get him to sleep to 7:30am, and then he is up until 10am.  Usually it was 9am.

He was a C-section baby and would often fall asleep during a feeding.

I would feed on breast, then change him to wake him up, then let him feed off the other breast and then he would fall asleep.  I would keep him upright for at least 30 mins afterwards as he does exhibit signs of reflux.

However since reading this board I am interested in having him stay awake after a feeding.  At night he does fall asleep after the feeding which is good.

But during the day I do have to work hard to get him to sleep.  Especially in the mornings he tends to be awake from 7:30am to around 10am (11 or more if I did not soothe him), and then he wakes every 2.5 hours or so to eat.

I mean by the time he eats, burps, changes diapers, and then falls asleep it is around 1.5 to 2 hours.

My question is....with newborns (mine is 5 weeks) is there very little A time?

A.

My 4 1/2 week old stays up about a half hour after feeding. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I wonder the same thing about activity time. I just look for signs of tiredness but I often can't tell if he is just yawning from being tired from continually falling asleep while eating or if he is really ready for a nap.

I wonder this too.  I mean he gets up eats, change diaper, eats and then burping in between, takes about 1.5 hours - then right back to bed.

There is a lot of windows in our house and he would stay up more, but he would be really cranky.

I am wondering is there a link for the sleepy cues and what they are?

I know yawning is one but he does yawn right after the first breast, or on the change table.

I think for such a small babies yawing is pretty much the key, crankiness too. I agree it is so tricky to understand them. I think I read somewhere these cues, if I find I let you know :)
