Swimming lessons at 6 months
« on: June 11, 2006, 14:16:20 pm »
My DS will be starting swimming lessons at the beginning of July for two weeks straight.  He will be 6 months on the nose when he starts.  We really wanted him to have lessons right away since we are around pools a lot and it is right at the beginning of the summer.  The classes he will be in (Canada) are for 6 month olds - three year olds.  My worry is the class times - they offer the classes at 10, 10:30 and 11:00 or 5:00, 5:30 or 6:00.  The first 2 times in the morning are within his nap time and the afternoon ones I was unsure of because he is getting close to dropping the catnap but often still needs to go down around 4:30-4:45 ish for a 20 min powernap or he is very cranky and I want him to be alert and refreshed when he goes for his lessons.  The 5:30 is his time for cereal  (and we'll just be starting to introduce fruits and veggies then) and 6:00 is getting too close to bedtime.
We chose the 11:00 because we thought it would work out the best for his routine.  I don't think anything will change much between now and then (although every once and again lately, he is dropping the catnap) but he has his am nap from about 9:00-10:15 or 10:30 so we figured it gives us the perfect amount of time to get him over there nice and refreshed from his nap.  What I am worried about is him getting hungry since he usually takes a bf at 11:00.  Any tips on this?  He just started to sleep through the night this week so he is pretty hungry when he wakes up in the morning but should I try to feed him a little later, say hold off until 7:30, when he gets up in the morning?  Or, would it be better to give him a few oz of ebm as soon as he wakes up to hold him over?  I should mention he started cereal a little over a month ago and has about a tbsp of it in the morning about an hour after his bf.

I too would feed him when he wakes up from his nap -- if he doesn't wake up in time to feed first, I would wake him a bit earlier -- as long as you stay away from those 45 minute intervals, you won't cause any permanent harm to his routine.  Plus that way you won't be uncomfortable then -- when we had swimming lessons and I was still BF I always worried about leaking while in the water.
