bottle to sippy cup?
« on: June 11, 2006, 20:40:58 pm »
Hi, my little one has bottles of milk, i have tried giving ehr milk in a nuby sippy and various others but she wont drink any. I would really appreciate some advice about how to get her to drink milk from anything other than a bottle!

Thanks

Hi,  how old is your LO and how long have you tried offering the sippy cup?

My DD refused the bottle and sippy cups, even the Nuby ones.  But she loves the ones with straws.  Gerber and Playtex make good ones.

I agree with onesock.

She will drink from a tommy tippee non-valve sippy when she is laying on the floor.

I have a cupboard full of sippy cups, then I just brought a straw cup, and thought it will add to the collection, but surprising enough she drinks from it.

I think, as still does not know how to tilt her head back she can drink from a straw cup sitting up or laying down.

iI feel your pain - I am having the same issue with my daughter.  I talked to an occupational therapist and she suggested moving to an open cup (which I am trying to do at meals but it is impractical other times) and a straw other times.  My daughter will take water and juice out of a sippy so it is not that she cannot take milk - she is choosing not to.  So far, the straw thing is not going very well so I may just try the sippy.  So I too welcome any advice!

I am just wondering why not still give them a bottle of milk?  If it is a matter if your LO's drinking enough milk I wouldn't stress out about it.  My DD still has bottles and sippy cups, I am not overly concerned which one she uses.  I have the Avent system so eveything is interchangable.

I figure she most likely won;t need to take a bottle to kingerdgarten and she LOVES a bottle so I just am going with the flow.  You might also want to look into sippy cups causing speech problems in some children, I have not researched it but have heard of children having difficulty with speech due to sippy cups becasue of the way they flatten their tongues while the suck.

Just my two bits!

i actually agree with Richelle.
i don't mind DS drinking milk from bottle. he finishes his bottle within 10-15 mins and he is not using it for comfort.

he drinks other drinks from sippy, straw cup, open cup ... so i know he will let me know when he is ready to  give up bottle.

I agree with not making a big deal about the bottle.  I have heard from many pediatricians that the bottle is ok for milk - as long as they don't carry it around with them all day long.  My son (18months) loves his milk in the bottle and will drink gallons of it.  I'm just going to let it happen until he's ready to give it up.
