Help w/ 6 mo old EASY
« on: June 20, 2006, 19:10:53 pm »
Can anyone help me tweak my 6 mo old EASY?  We are not doing solids (tried for 3 weeks, and failed, so giving it a week off, then we'll try again)

here's our current routine:  (it gets off if he has a short AM nap)
he wakes early 4:45~5:45 ish (I leave him to fuss or play, or pu.pd if necessary)
6:30 up & bf
9 nap (ideally 1:20, though sometimes as short as 50 min)
10:20/10:30 up & bf
1 nap (ideally 1:40, though sometimes as short as 1:20)
2:30 ish up & bf
5:15 bf, bedtime routine bed at 6 (this used to be 6:15/7 before we dropped catnap)
(usually night feed around 10:30 & 2:30)

Questions:
How much day sleep for a 6 mo old? (I've heard 3 hrs total, is that right?)
We recently dropped catnap, but 2:30~7 is a long time for him to be awake.  We temporarily moved up bedtime to 6, but still sometimes overtired, and lots of early AM wakes (as early as 4:45!)
What should be our "goal" routine?  I'm trying to extend A time to move those naps later, but it's a slow process.
Any other suggestions for us?
Thanks for any advice!

Has he been refusing to take a catnap?

Yes, he started refusing catnap....15-20 min of fighting for a 30 min nap didn't seem worth it.  He had also started those early wakes....and I Though catnap was the culprit....apparently not so.  of course now we deal with overtiredness at end of day.

When he has early wakes (as early as 4:45, sometimes not till 6) he usually dozes off and on, but not back into heavy sleep. Today, however, he skipped his 2:30AM feed (woke briefly, but quickly self settled), and when he woke at 4:45, I fed him, he went back down and didn't hear a peep till 6:45!  I was so pleased with this.  Seems like a huge success.  I was worried he wouldn't eat well at 6:30, but he ate pretty good (I only fed 1 side at 4:45).

Are we aiming for a 3 hr A time at this age?  It would nicely space naps and bedtime if he could handle 3 hr A time eventually.  Today we are very successful with 2:35....been doing that for 3 days.  Plan to try 2:40 tomorrow.

Okay I would say A time of 2hrs 30 mins - 2hrs 45mins.  You will want to aim for about 3hrs in about a month.

I would put him to bed for the first nap of the day, about 15 mins later, and then the pm nap about 1.30pm.
