A Possible Nursing Strike at 3 Months?
« on: June 22, 2006, 00:58:09 am »
Is it possible for a three month old to go on a nursing strick so early? My son always (up to this point) has been a pretty good eater (at least nursing for 15 to 20 minutes on one side). Now, for the past two days, I can barely get him to nurse a couple of minutes. I tried offering both breasts and tried to change my nursing positions but so far, nothing realy has worked.

But, here's the strange thing, he's having plenty of pee diapers and he poops at least once every other day...so...I really shouldn't worry that much??? Also, when I do offer him the breast, he doesn't cry or whine but, he does pull off my breast all the time. He really seems very uninterstead all of a sudden.

He's all ready on the four hour feeding schedule for a while now (he's close to 15 pounds in weight) but now, it seems he can wait to be fed even longer...sometimes 6 to 8 hours later. What's going on????? I'm confused on what to do.  :-\ Any helpful hits and sugguestions from the forum will help me out BIG TIME!!!

Thanks in advance!

PS...He's never had a bottle yet and I don't own a breast pump. He's strictly a "Boob Man"

Hi.  Welcome to the Baby Whisperer site.  I would say that your lo has become quite efficient.  Some babies only need to eat for a couple minutes to get what they need (my girls were the same way)  I would try to feed closer to 3 or 3.5  hours at this age moving to 4 hours at 4 months.  If he's happy, producing the diapers and gaining weight, I would not worry.  Sounds like you are doing a great job!

Proud to have breastfed for a combined total of 35 months

hi.

in addition to becoming more efficient at nursing, I also think the workd is suddenly a really interesting place for a 3 mo.  They are able to turn around and look at things, so once the initial hunger is satiated, they like to peer around and see what else is going on. i found with rosie i couldn't nurse her anywhere where she might have other people to look at or anything interesting. If I nursed her upstairs lying down she fed really really well, but she became more of a snacker (and still is) if she's got anything better to do!!

she went overnight for 8 hours from 8 weeks, and now will easily go as long as that during the day if i don't think i ought to initiate nursing sessions!

You hit that right on the spot!!! When there's alot going on, he takes his little sweet time nursing. I try to nurse him in a pretty quiet area of the house, but that's no good either. I have two other very child boys as well ( 3 1/2 and 2 1/2) that love to follow me around the house...to my room, to the baby's room, to the bathroom and even to my car garage. I can't catch a break!

tricky.

i ahve a similar problem with a cat and a dog who are very very interesting to look at if you are a baby.

even on the bed she thinks that reaching for pillows, or my clothes is more interesting than nursing. after all, those breasts will still be there later right?  as far as she's concerned she has worked out that there's milk available on tap, whenever she wants it, so who cares if she takes her time?  she doesn't.  and it's not like i have anything else to do anyway right??

babies!

they're nearly as bad as men, but cuter!
