Eating less because of heat??
« on: June 26, 2006, 02:42:56 am »
Hi there!  I have an 8 week old dd, and she hasn't been eating much the last 2 days. Only spends about 4 minutes at the breast, every 2-3 hours.  It has been very hot here, and I am wondering if that may be why. She isn't acting hungry either. Any of you experience this?  Thanks!

hi :)

well, it's quite opposite for us: my dd is sooo hungry and eats really a lot every 2,5~3 hours and the temperatures have been around 30 degrees Celsius here so it's really hot.
maybe your dd gets just really thirsty and needs to drink more than to eat. but even if you feel the feeds are too short, it's still nutritious milk not water and maybe with this hot weather it's just enough for her? just a thought, I'm no expert :)

as long as she's fine and healthy, don't worry.

hugs,
Monika

sweetemma,
It could be that your lo has become more efficient and needs less time to get the milk she needs.  Is she still producing wet/dirty diapers?  Is she happy and alert during A times?  Hang in there, and if you are concerned, you can always take her in to the dr for a weight check to make sure she is gaining.

For your LO's age still feeding every 2-3 hours is fairly normal. Is it a big change from what was happening before?

I would agree with the suggestion that perhaps she's just taking short feeds at certain times to get some refreshing foremilk - this is the way it's designed to work. Are there longer feeds at other times in the day?

The main thing has been mentioned before: is she getting wet nappies (6 or so every 24 hours) and does she seem content and her usual self otherwise?

Mine did this too. He is 8 weeks as well. Thiink of our bodies when we are really hot.  Not as hungry too.
It went from 15 mins on the breast to around 10mins.
