stupid question?
« on: June 29, 2006, 19:32:03 pm »
ok here goes.
I have put my ds back on Farley's 2nd milk, cos of reflux?
anyway since hes been back on this milk when he has finished feeding the bottle has like a 1 ounce layer of bubbles like the head on a pint of larger, now i am sure it did this before when he was on the milk
just wanted to know is this normal and is it a good thing or does it mean he is getting full of wind? which i could totally do without on top of the reflux!

any help much appreciated
Thanks Emma

What type of bottles and teats are you using?

Is the milk made fresh or has it been stored in the fridge?

From a personal point of view I don't AVENT bottles, although Calum has never has reflux or colic I still find (even now) that If I have reverted to using them in an emergency - he gets AWFUL wind.

I am not sure about the milk head that is getting left, but I would think it was wind that your LO is swallowing back again. As I have never experienced that with any of the bottles below I have used.

I tend to stick to bottles that are designed for colic i.e that have a vent in the bottle to let the air out,  not just a wide neck teat to reduce colic/wind (like AVENT are).

Ones I have used/use are:
Chicco (unscrew at the bottom of the bottle and have a vent to allow air out)
MAM (unscrew at the bottom of the bottle and have a vent to allow air out) although I found they very leaky and didn't heaty well in my AVENT bottle warmer.
Boots own - were fantastic, however they stopped doing them.

I am now using NUK bottles because they hold 10oz and have a vent thing in the teat.

My friend has a 10month old and still swears by the chicco bottle and omneo comfort for delicate tums.

I found that Avent bottles, because of the way they are designed to be so called "anti-colic" (not that they were anti colic for William) they suck in air to relace the milk that baby is eating so that baby does not have to release the teat to let the air in occasionally when a vacuum forms. This air travels through the milk and makes it frothy...

I used 2 different formulas with the Avent Anti Colic bottles and every feed I ended up with a load of froth in the bottle at the end.

It sounds normal to me.. and yes the air is better in the froth than in your LOs tummy. xxx

Edited to add - I changed to Bfree (Dr Browns) bottles and they were so so much better - less spitting and dribbling of milk, less wind, better latch on to the teat etc...

he was on sma until monday using the same bottles and teats, but there was no bubbles in the bottle with the sma milk ???
i did try the mam colic bottles for a while and cant think why i stopped, could it be just something to do with the farleys milk, when its in a powder form it is definately grainier than the sma ???

just dont want to be making matters worse for ds by giving him more wind?

Boots do a bottle very similar to the one on the link that Helen has left for you. I noticed them the other day when I was buying the NUK bottles.

The new designs all have an internal vent prevents air bubbles form forming in breast milk and formula.

We use Avent bottles and, while there was some dribbling in the beginning, once our DS started latching-on well, we started getting the froth. (He sucks down his bottles at about 1 oz/min and never comes up for air!) But we also get a good head on the milk if we mix the water and formula powder in the bottle, just before a feed. If you want to eliminate the froth, try adding 2-3 drops of anti-gas drops (simethicone) to the bottle, before you feed. The drops didn't seem to help in the usual way, but they do get rid of the air bubbles in the bottles.

well i ended up with the nuk bottles with the hole in the teat? was so undecided i have never really thought he had a problem with wind but dh was up with him at 1am today and said he was passing a lot of wind so we put it down to the new milk so i have changed to aptamil and if that is no good then i will go with the cow and gate comfort!
so far he has had 1 feed out of the nuk bottles and i got 2 massive burps and only a liitle sick so we will see how we get on, i always thought avent were expensive bottles till i went shopping today ;D
i think i went with the nuk bottles cos calums mum uses them, but then there not a specific anti colic bottle, but then 1 thing mac hasnt yet got is colic?

thanks for all your help
Emma
will see how we get on dh will kill me if next week i spend another £30 changing to dr browns ;D
well its all trial and error here at the minute.

Hi,
I have a bad reflux baby and I learned with DS that it is better to stir the formula with a fork and not shake it.  Shaking adds air and makes that froth with some of the formulas.  The times I have been out and had to shake instead of stir, DD spit up so much more than usual.  I think I'm going to start keeping a plastic fork in the diaper bag to prevent this from happening.  WE only use Dr. Browns and when I bought them years ago, the box said to stir and not shake.  Don't know if it still gives that direction, but it seems to make a big difference. Plus, stirring with a fork seems to get rid of the clumps better too.  I squish them against the sides of the bottle.

Emma,

I have had experience with the bubbles in the bottom of the bottle.  When we changed formula to the follow on formula I noticed that it was a lot thicker, and when you shake the bottle it causes a lot of foam - this is normal.

I do know that with the #2 formula it is a lot thicker than the from birth, so that is why you are probably having all the bubbles in the bottom.

I too use avent and have never had any problems.
