Need more veggie ideas
« on: July 02, 2006, 03:54:05 am »
Hi, yup I need more veg ideas for my LO at 6 months.  I have peas, I tried to make up green beans, (but I don't think he is going to like the texture) winter squash, sweet potato.... what else can I do?

Zucchini?
White potato?
Summer squash?
Carrots?

Eveyplace I read says something different.

can anyone tell me about mangos, what should I look for when picking one out.  Each one I have gotten has been so bitter. Yuck.

Thanks
Not so great in the kitchen... Zoey

Hi Zoey,

Paul's 7 months old, and I've tried zucchini (bit hit!), white potato, spinach and carrots (all time favourite!).

My dd is now 7.5 months and started at 6 months (new item every 3rd day or so), in addition to rice cereal and barley cereal we've done-
bananas and avocado (high in nutrients, dd didn't like avocado on its own)
squash
yams and sweet potato
carrots
yellow beans
pears
apple
brocolli (hated it, mixed it with banana and she loved it)
peas

I was going to try mangos but I read somewhere not to until 8 mths (can't remember the reason for it). With mangos, if they're hard on the outside they're somewhat bitter and not ripe enough.

With all the veggies I steam them (to retain nutrients it's better than boiling) then put them in a food processor with a few spoons of the water that they steamed in, then I freeze them in a tray that has cubes and a lid. This way I make batches up at a time and put them in a freezer bag labelled with the date.

With the peas I used to push them through a strainer after the processor to get rid of the skins.

DD's favorite veggies are zucchini, yellow squash, peas, and carrots. She also does broccoli (especially with melted cheese), cauliflower, corn. Spinach has been iffy with her, sometimes she likes it, other times she doesn't.  :-\

I used the food processor too, it was one of the best "baby" purchases I ever made.  ;D

DD is 6 months and has been eating solids for 3 weeks. i try to give her veggies more than fruit, just so she doesn't develop a sweet tooth and so far we've had...

courgette
carrot
sweet potato
squash
avocado (her favourite, but not strictly a vegetable!)
brocolli
sweetcorn

When you pick a mangoe they should give a little on the outside, this means they are ripe on the inside.

Gosh, picking mangoes is the easy part. Eating it without getting the stuff stuck between teeth is the challenging part!  ;) Anyone have tips for eating mangoes?  I hate having it stuck in my teeth cuz it's a real pain to fish them out afterwards.  DD doesn't have that problem though, not yet, cuz she still has some gaps between her teeth, lucky girl.
