Hi All
I am going to start my LO on formula from 6 months but would like to keep one bf in the day so that I still get my cuddles and Thomas still gets some bubs  ;)
Just wanted to know...

Which is the best feed to keep in - is it the morning one when my boobs are at their best?
Will I start to leak during the day if I only feed first thing in the morning?
Which is the best formula to use when transitioning and which stage formula? (I am in the UK)

WOuld love to hear from all the mums who have kept one feed in!
Thank you girlies!

I wanted to keep 1 bf with my ds#1 - he was 13mo at the time but about 1 week after I dropped from 2 feeds down to 1 (evening) he started to get really upset feeding & then refused - it may have been because I was preg (didn't know was only few days along at that stage)...I  just didn't maintain enough supply on one feed & I always had great supply (both boys were more than 10kg at 6mo before I gave solids)... since then I have heard of quite a few people who couldn't maintain supply on less than 2 feeds... so be mindful of that.

That is true - I'm afraid. I guess you may not know until you try.

Remember to make the transition slowly - a guide is often a week to drop each feed. Your breasts should adjust and and leaking should sort itself out. (It usually does stop as your baby gets older anyway.)

I think when it comes to choosing a feed to keep you should consider the circumstances. He may be too young to express a preference but is there a time when you feel more relaxed? If the purpose is for comfort then when are you able to offer more cosy time? Usually the morning or last at night is the last to go. The morning is a time when suppy can be better but I guess it depends on whether you have to get ready for work etc.

I'm going to move this post to bottlefeeding as you may find mums there who have experience of maintaining one bf and you'll certainly get tips on formula. BUT I'm going to do you a special link on the bf board for mums who have kept one feed in so they head your way. Hope that's OK.

I just moved to 2 nursings a day- in the morning and after I come home from work. I slowly dropped his EBM bottles over 2-3 weeks. I haven't noted a supply issue adn he seems to nurse with a greater intensity/purpose than previously. I didn't need to start with formula since he is so close to 1 year. So you might have issues with LO preferring bottle over boob. Best of luck!

HI

In terms of formula I would use Aptamil First - it is one of the very few whey based formulas and so is easier to digest and closer to breastmilk - it can be used up to 12 months.

Thank you to everyone who has replied so far!
Hmmm...
Sounds like it might not be as easy as I thought it was gonna be!  Does anyone know if it is still beneficial to the baby if I continue with just the one bf?  If not then I spose it might be easier to do a total transition - I have heard from a couple of people that have had nightmares trying to get their little one to take a bottle after 6 months of being bf... the only way they have managed to combat it is to stop bf completely so that they are so hungry that they take the bottle... don't want the poor lad confused as to when he can have bub and when he can't  :-\
Is Aptamil First available anywhere?  i have never seen it but perhaps because I have only noticed Cow and Gate or SMA!  We bought SMA stage 3 but from reading other posts it looks like it might bring constipation problems with all the extra iron!

Aptamil is available everywhere.. I used it for a while when Will was born and I got it from tesco and morrissons. They say its the closest thing to breast milk in the formula world but I found it very harsh.. it hurt my skin when it dripped on me..  but thats just my experience of it.. lol.. I came off it as it gave will terrible wind and colic symptoms.

If going onto formula for the first time I wouldn't use a stage 3 or a hungry baby formula... they may be too heavy.. maybe as a pp says a stage 1 or stage 2 may be more appropriate.

Thanks for posting this.  I too was trying to keep 2 feeds.  I was still BFing at 7:00ish AM and at 6:30ish PM, but slowly, the PM one was feeling weird to me, and he didn't stay on for long.  I'm taking Fenugreek (recommended by my midwife) to help keep up my supply, but I fear it's diminishing.  I'd love to be able to keep the morning feed.  I hope I can.
