Dips and sauces
« on: August 06, 2006, 23:45:41 pm »
What are your LO's favorite dips and sauces? I'm looking for some new ideas ...

DD loved spaghetti sauce in her food for a while, but that phase passed, so we're laying off on this for a while so that it becomes an exciting "new" taste to her in a few weeks.  ;)

Today, I tried this tofu thing I picked up at the supermarket a couple days ago, it's called Pete's Tofu2Go which contains tofu (not the plain white kind, but the "fried" (I'm guessing) kind) plus a dipping sauce .  http://www.sunrise-soya.com/petestofu.htm
The one we tried today was the Sesame Ginger flavor. There was actually sesame bits inside the tofu, and the tofu was already slightly flavored so it is tasty plain, but even better with a dab of the sauce. DD loved it.   Does anyone know how to make some sort of sesame ginnger sauce like this one?  I'm thinking I can probably get her to eat a lot of other things by dipping it into such a sauce.  One can always hope...  ;D

Not a sauce, but DD loves cheese melted over her food. But you can only do that so many times a day, ya know?

Always trying to find new ways to serve veggies. She will eat them when mixed into other things, but not usually when giving her plain veggies (carrots yes; peas yes; zucchini reject). What kind of dips/sauces do you serve veggies with? Lately I've been melting cheese over her broccoli. Other veggies get mixed into her other food (noodles, ravioli, etc). I'm thinking she might eat the veggies if it's smothered in sauce or dip?

DD used to love mashed potatoes, but she's gone off the now. So I'm also looking for a new way to serve potatoes. I just boiled two red potatoes for her, and am thinking of cutting them into finger size cubes (she's also in a non-spoon-feed phase  :( ) so she can pick them up herself, but I need to flavor the potatoes somehow. So I'm also wondering what kind af dip/sauce would go well with the potatoes.

I guess I'm just looking for new ways to serve the same foods cuz she's suddenly gotten tired of the same old selection which she loved for a long time. Toddlers...  ::)

We've done basically any kind of salad dressing (ranch, honey mustard, italian, etc), sour cream, plain or flavored yogurt, and barbecue sauce. I try not to think about what I think would "go" with a certain food...I just throw something out, even if I think it's gross, and he'll often end up loving some really weird combos (broccoli and ketchup? Ewww!). For the sesame ginger sauce, you might try the Asian foods aisle or the marinades aisle at the grocery store.

Ketchup... I remember mixing it in my plain rice when I was a kid. I loved it that way. I know it sounds weird, but I bet I'd still like it if I do in now. But then, I've always had a taste for tangy sweet/sour type flavors. I'll have to try the broccoli & ketchup combo.

Ah... I haven't tried the sour cream yet, will have to get some.

I'll have to remember to cruise the Asian foods aisle at the supermarket for some sort of sesame ginger sauce. I was thinking it would probably be less expensive to get the tofu & sauce separately, rather than get the package I picked up a couple days ago.
