Unpredictable night feedings and milk supply
« on: August 07, 2006, 13:26:03 pm »
Hi!  My exclusively breastfed son has been all over the place with night wakings these past few weeks.  Before this, he was always waking twice a night to eat (once between 10:30 and 12:30, and once between 2:30 and 4.)  I do not dream feed.  But, this last week, he has slept all the way through from 7 till 5:30 am three times (or he woke up once or twice but settled right back to sleep with a few pats).  Three times he woke up once and I fed him, and once he did his old routine (2 wakings to eat).  My question is, on those nights he is sleeping through, should I get up and pump to ensure that my supply stays up?  I'm also concerned about mastitis--I've had it 3 times (and one other time I think I had a milder case).  I do not have a problem feeding once or twice a night, and it actually worries me when he doesn't wake to eat, because I don't feel he's getting enough only having 4 feeds per 24 hours...  Thanks in advance!

Until lo is consistent on wakings, I would think that you should get up and pump.  Especially with the problems with mastitis.  She will eventually become more consistent.  When she is, then work on lowering your supply gradually.

Hi there!

Wow, I hope you are on to something new!  It would be great if DS would sleep through every night eh?  I think that at 6 months (esp if DS is a good size) that 4 feeds is plenty during the day.  If he eats well during the day then I woudln't worry about the night.  As for the inconsistent wakings ... you could try PU/PD or pat/shush to see if he will go back to sleep without feedings thereby making the sleeping thru more consistent.  Do you think that he is ready to go the whole night without a feed?  If so then I wouldn't worry about pumping in the night because you will want to try and eliminate that feed anyway.  However, if you think he could still use it then it might be a good idea to pump in the night (doesn't sound like much fun  :() so you can maintain your supply and ward off any mastitis!

Once my LO was sleeping through the night, he was fine with 5 daytime feedings. I understand your fear of mastitis and I would pump a small amount until you are sure he is consistently sleeping through the night. Slowly drop the pumping session by a few minutes every few days and you should be OK.

Thanks, everyone.  I think he can still use that 1 night feed, since he seems genuinely starving when he wakes up (sucks like crazy on my shoulder, then when he latches on, sucks super fast at first.)  I think he could go without the second one, though, so I'll probably work on dropping the 11ish one (since he is already less likely to wake up for that one).  He is 19 pounds now, so I think if I can get him on 5 feeds a day, he would be fine.  I'll have to wait till September, though, since DH leaves Thur to go out of the country for over 2 weeks (yikes!)  Here's something interesting:  The past 3 nights, I've been getting up once to pump one side (in case he wakes later and needs to eat, I save the other one for him).  The first night, I woke up at 5 and pumped; I didn't go out of my room, and his room is all the way on the other side of the house, so there's no way I woke him up.  As I was about to start pumping, he cried.  The next day, I woke up at 4 and was just starting to pump--and DS cried.  Last night, I woke up at 3:30, pumped about an ounce and was still at it...and he cried.  I swear, he is sensing that the milk is leaving without him!!  :)   Assuming this is just a coincidence and won't continue, how am I supposed to know when to pump at night to keep up my supply/ward off the evil mastitis?  Right now, I just pump whenever I wake up uncomfortable, after 2 am.  Does it matter if it's 2 or 4 or 5??  Should I be pumping twice, since sometimes he eats twice?  Sorry, I know it can't be this complicated, ds has just thrown me for a loop, since he's always been awake a ton at night!

How old is DS?  As long as he is over 3.5 months he should be fine with 5 feeds a day.  He is definitely big enough to be eating enough during the one night time feed to carry him through.  My ds is 4 months and 17 lbs and we are doing 5 feeds a day.

If you pump at night I don't think it should matter what time it is as long as (a) it is before you get engorged and (b) enough time lapses before you feed ds again so that you don't have supply issues.

Good luck!
