Gas Problem - not sure what to do
« on: August 07, 2006, 16:08:22 pm »
DS has always been a gassy baby.  He was doing so much better and we went a few weeks with no problems and now we are back to square 1.  I have tried avoiding foods on all the lists going around (example:  milk, chocolate, onion, garlic, etc) and nothing seems to help.  We also use gas drops with almost every feeding and gripe water now and then.  He doesn't seem to be too gassy in the day, but at night he wakes up every two hours in pain  :-[  Does anyone have any ideas????

Additional info:
We are on a four hour easy and feed at the following times:  6am, 10am, 2pm, 6pm, 10pm (df), 2am
DS is 3.5 months old and is 17lbs
I have a pretty fast let down, but I have slowed it down.  He use to choke and cough while eating but doesn't seem to have any problems now.  During night feedings, he normally only feeds off one side since supply is high (during the day he normally eats from both sides).
I am a working mom and express for day time feedings.  Because of this, I know that he eats approximately 5 ounces at daytime feedings.  I think that feedings from me are about the same, but who knows.

Putting him back down when he wakes as become a science.  I go into the nursery and put my hand on his chest to let him know I am there.  Once I have tried this for a minute or two, I hold him in the glider in a vertical position propped on my legs facing me.  I let him hold my fingers until he relaxes a little.  I then transfer him back to the crib and put my hand back on his chest.  He squirms for about 5 minutes and passes a good amount of gas (Either picking him up and putting him back down helps him pass it or just the fact that he has relaxed a little helps).  As soon as he passes the gas he falls peacefully back to sleep.  I wait about five minutes to make sure he is out and then go to sleep.  This cycle repeats every two hours.

It hurts me so much to see him pain.  I have even thought about quiting bf which would be such a shame since I have such an easy time with it other than the gas issue.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Have u tried getting a really good burp out of your lo after feeds??  I also found massaging before bedtime really, really helped.  I used warm oil on dd's tummy.  I also avoid veggies like cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower.  It sucks but I try to eat every other vegie that her tummy agrees with.  HTH!! :)

  HtH.

I do get huge burps at every feed including the df (he sounds like a grown man :) ), but I have not tried the massaging.  I will give that a try tonight - thank you!
