1 Nap - Not long enough
« on: August 23, 2006, 20:19:37 pm »
DS is now 13 months and has transitioned himself to one nap for the past 2 months.

He wakes up at around 7:00 am, and goes down for his nap at 12:00 midday (he is really tired by then).  Our problem is that he will sleep for 1 1/2 hours max 1 hour 40 minutes, and that is it.  He wakes up happy as though he has had a good sleep, but I know his is not long enough for him.  By the time 5:00pm comes he is really tired, and grumpy.  I am very hesitant in letting him go down for a cat nap as it disrupts our whole routine, and then battle to get him to bed before 10:00pm.

His normal bed time is around 6:30 /7:00 the latest due to the fact he is so tired.

Is there anyway we can work on trying to extend his naps?

Thanks
Paula

Could he be overtired by 12 and possibly do better/sleep longer if he went down at 11:45 or 11:30 even? Or if not have you tried wake-to sleep to extend the nap?

We have tried putting him down earlier - either he just plays about or refuses to go down at all.  On the odd occasion that he does go down earlier - he stil sleeps the same amount of time and then refuses to go down again in the afternoon.

We have tried wake to sleep, has worked on the occasions where he has woken up before an hour, and helps him get back to sleep for another 30 - 40 minutes, but that is it, then he is wide awake and wants to play.

What if you tried wake to sleep at one hour 10 minutes? Perhaps go in then and gently stroke his cheek, tug on his lovey, etc - just enough to make him sigh/stir but not fully wake?

You could also try slightly delaying the nap until 12:15 even - maybe take a short walk to keep him going?

Going in about an hour and 10 minutes sounds like a good idea - I will have to give that a try on the weekend.

As for delaying the nap - unfortunatley they put them down at mid day in nursery.  If I work on the wake to sleep over the weekend, it might help things.

How long do you recon it would take for wake to sleep to work properly?

Many people say it takes three days to really work - but some have had success after 1-2 days and some have taken longer.

That's true too - M always takes shorter naps when teething or ill - like she's too uncomfortable to make it through another transition...

Could it be that he has gotten into this routine in nursery, and wakes up when all the other children wake up?  If that is the case is it going to be hard to break this routine?

Do all the kids at nursery only sleep 1.5hrs?

My question is the same as Natasha's - that seems a short nap...

Yes I think so - Sometimes he only as 45 minutes and they do not seem worried about it.
I think as long as he has a sleep they are happy.

Sounds like this could be the issue Paula. Could you ask them to try and extend his nap while her is at nursery? How often does he go?
