Stop using highchair
« on: August 25, 2006, 05:30:38 am »
Just wondering... at what age did you stop using the highchair?

DD, at 17 months, seems to have less tolerance for sitting in the highchair for the same length of time. She gets squirmy (claustrophobic?) sooner than she used to, and it looks like she's trying to squirm her way out.  So then I take her out, and we sometimes finish our meal while she's standing up (well, standing, and walking about, "playing" with something, coming back for next bite, walking about, ...  ::) ) so it's not like she's squirming because she's done eating. Is she already outgrowing the highchair? As for fit, she's on the petite size and fits fine, lots of room to grow.

I made the switch from a highchair to a booster at 15 months and she seems a lot happier at mealtime now.

I agree BUT IMHO when you invite baby/toddler to the table for meals you need to have expectations for manners and if they don't have them send them back to the high chair. We took our second born out of the highchair at that age and she just was flat out NOT ready to sit with us. IMHO if you still throw your dishes on the floor you aren't ready to sit at the table like a big boy/girl. We ended up putting her back in the highchair and making her "earn" her way out by sitting in a civil way and not throwing her plate and spoon! Evan is 17 months and he is SO not ready to sit at the family table.

Of course maybe my children are savages!  LOL!

At about 15 months we got DD a booster chair with straps so she can 'eat at the table' with the rest of us but is still contained.   Her attitude to sitting up for dinner definitely changed.
Worth a go!

Same as everyone else. At around 14 months we switched to booster seat at the table.  He LOVES it in his seat (so long as there's food in front of him ;D)

We did a booster seat around a year.  She likes it so much better and I like not having the high chair in the kitchen.

I hadn't thought about a booster yet, but your comment about table manners made me realize that DD is not ready for one. She doesn't quite throw dishes on the floor, but when she has finished picking out the more "desirable" parts of her meal, she will pick up her bowl and pour the contents out onto her highchair tray. It's her way of letting me know she's had enough, and that there's no way she's touching another bite of the stuff *I* want her to eat.

Oh the other annoying thing she does is touch herself with her dirty hands. She touches her food, fine... but then, why does she have to pat her head? ::)  Sometimes I think it's her way of telling me she's frustrated, "mommy! you got it all wrong, this isn't what I want to eat!"

Interesting about the attitude change. I didn't know that boosters came with straps?

I *think* most of them do -- I guess not just one of those seats that make them higher up -- here, this is the one that we have -- it holds her in the seat and she can either eat off the tray or off the table.  We don't really use bowls here, I just let her eat off the tray.

That booster looks nice and I can see how you strap them into it like you would in a high chair. I couldn't tell from the website pictures, but... does this booster strap onto your regular chair? Or does it just sit on it? I would imagine that the booster straps in, so that it and your child doesn't fall when the booster falls of the regular chair.

It has a strap that goes under the chair seat and a strap that goes behind the chair back, so it's pretty secure.
